Whats the deal with about the Columbia/Barnard relationship?
Talking to current students/ Observing fb pages (overheard at Barnard), many Barnard students constantly disparage columbia and try to actually make it seem like Barnard is a more elite/difficult school, and that they would never in a million years ever want to be columbia students (While in reality many applied and were rejected). I’ve seen countless posts making fun of Columbia students, and others saying that Columbia classes are a joke and are much easier than Barnard, and scoffing at the intuition that Barnard is easier/less prestigious than Columbia. Ironically, many of the students disparaging Columbia are the same ones who post in their linkedin/fb education that they attend “Barnard College at Columbia University”, instead of just "Barnard College’.
I always thought that it would be Columbia Students who look down on Barnard, but it seems to be the other way around? And don’t even get me started on the amount of hate i’ve seen re: White Male Columbia boys!
Any thoughts from current students of either institution?
Columbia has four undergraduate institutions: Columbia College, Barnard, School of General Studies and the Engineering school. My impression is that there is rivalry among the students much like siblings can have spats, but from an employer’s perspective or that of a graduate school, no one really cares. They all attend the same classes and have the same standards, with some minor differences. Some schools have their own diplomas, but all under the umbrella of Columbia. One school has a much lower admission rate, but not the highest GPA of attending students. One school has decidedly less financial aid. They have different core requirements. And the like. But basically they are all one institution with minor differences.
