I've got all my apps ready, and I thought I knew where I wanted to do ED (Wellesley), but I'm not sure anymore... Help please!

bump?

Hey definitely don’t do an ED if you aren’t sure about it. Plus you don’t have to ED in my opinion. You have good scores and a solid resume so I would go RD (or EA if any of your schools have that option) and then make the final decision when your acceptances come in the spring! You probably have a solid chance at Wellesley without ED, to be frank.

Hi! your chances aren’t horrible but that gpa really holds you back from all of these schools. even with good reason behind it, schools often have trouble accepting people with GPAs below a certain standard. so while you are by no means out of the running, you should temper your expectations a bit just based off that. I know you say you struggle with writing, but in the sections of the common app that say “if there are circumstances in your life not reflected in your application that contribute to your context…” (or that general gist) you really need to be clear and effective so that the lower gpa is justified.
Good luck, you aren’t out of the running but you’ll have to work for it!

@jawlove I realize my GPA isn’t the best, but since these are LAC’s, will my having completed all the courses in the math major (as detailed in my EC’s) help a little bit? Also what should my pitch be, based off of my overall record?

@collegedreamz22 Thanks! I’m hoping to tweak my apps a bit more, so hoping for the best!

With that GPA they all seem like reaches, and your EC’s are nothing spectacular. The languages look great, and so does the SAT score. If you wrote a great essay you might have a chance, but I would take Cornell, Dartmouth, and Swarthmore off the list.

@Alden97 Given that liberal arts colleges evaluate apps more holistically, would the math courses (entirety of math major) that I’ve taken increase my chance any? Also wouldn’t Barnard be a far reach (statistically), like the other three you mentioned?

Your GPA seems low but if you give a reason for it im sure it will be fine. Your ecs are good, colleges love community service. Also your sat score is great! Good luck!

Wellesley for ED would give you a higher chance, so if you’re sure, go for it. Also, because your GPA isn’t the best, maybe applying early would give you a higher chance of being admitted despite it. You definitely have the SAT score for these schools though (that makes me jealous lol). Wish you the best of luck, and if you have time, please click on my profile and find my chance me thread. Would really appreciate feedback.

What a beautiful SAT score. And write outstanding essays really. Get help from English teacher or guidance. Ask the CC community for help as well. Describe the setbacks during those freshman/sophomore years and how you turned it around to get such a high SAT score not wanting to fail everything else.

Thanks @ToriP7, @97college, @Harsh1296 ! I’ll definitely work on my essays to improve my chances.

EDIT: Update to my original post: When I said not sure about Wellesley ED, I’m in love with the school, just not sure of my chances… but I’m going to give it my best shot.

@lostyetfound‌ My apologies for taking so long to get back to you, I don’t really come on here all that often, as the Chance Thread usually fosters virulent narcissism and hostility. To answer your question, the math classes/grades and focus definitely helps, however perhaps not as much as you’d hope. LACs look ‘holistically’ (how holistically depends on the school) so while they will love to see that you overcame hardship and are passionate about a field, they also often prefer what they call “intellectual breadth”, meaning they want students who are not committed to one area. So, in short, your math abilities/classes do counterbalance your GPA a bit, but also narrow you as a candidate.

I feel the same way as most people in these comments, so I will not comment on your candidacy.

However, if I may ask, why are you applying to all of these schools? They are very different. Urban vs Rural, Big school vs small school… These schools are extremely unrelated unless you have some kind of major that all of these specialize in, which I’m not seeing I think you may want to reconsider the specific colleges you are applying to.

Thanks for the responses @jawlove‌ and @Bailkun‌. I’ll revisit my prospects and make a decision accordingly.

Sorry but the bad GPA pretty much wrecks your chances for any of these schools even as an ED applicant… I am sorry. What is your unweighted GPA? I noticed you only put your weighted GPA.

You might have a shot at Wesleyan, I would use my ED for there as it is the only place out of all the schools you listed that would take that GPA ED maybe. Once again, I apologize for how douchey I may be coming across. What is yoru unweighted GPA?

@PSC2IVY‌ I appreciate you being realistic. My UW is abysmal so I’d rather not say. I’ve reassessed my chances, and have made plans accordingly.
