Barnard ED 2018

(I already posted this, but I didn’t know there was a Barnard specific forum so I’m restarting it here)

I know it’s incredibly early, but I can’t wait any longer to start talking about Barnard with others who are applying early decision. After all, the supplements to the common app were finally released a couple days ago and the whole process is starting to feel a little too real.

The application is due in just 10 1/2 weeks and personally, that terrifies me. So anyway I just want this thread to be a place where we can share concerns and go through this scary but exhilarating experience together.

Good luck to everyone and I hope we’ll all be classmates in the Barnard class of 2018!

Hi! I’m a rising senior from Michigan. I literally cannot believe it’s time to apply to college! I have been obsessing over Barnard for like over two years. I just love everything about it. I have yet to start the supplements because I just way too nervous about it. Anyway, thanks so much for starting this forum, I’ve been pouring over the previous year’s posts and am so excited that it’s finally my turn to post!

Haha! Same! Have you visited? Michigan is such a long way from NYC! I’m from the Bronx, and I’m super excited about applying too! I promise writing the supplements makes it feel even more real? Is anyone going to attend their open house in October?

wow Michigan is really far! I live in Vermont but my aunt lives in Brooklyn so I visit her a lot and I’ve been to campus twice. just out of curiosity (and hopefully it’s not even necessary) but if you don’t get in early decision, where else are you guys applying?

i didn’t seriously take a look at barnard until about five months ago, and i quickly fell in love with it. i love everything about it!! i don’t know yet if i’ll apply ED, but i really want to. i can’t believe it’s actually time to do college apps…i’ve been reading this site for so long, it seems unreal. if i got into barnard, it would make my life! i’m trying not to get too hung up on it, but it’s soooo hard, haha.

I totally agree, Barnard is just way too perfect not to completely fall in love with it. I’ve been on one official tour, but I’ve visited the campus and walked around a bunch of times.

If I don’t get into Barnard, I think I will probably end up at either the University of Michigan or university of Pittsburgh. Barnard is really the only small liberal arts college I think I am going to apply to, but I honestly feel it is so perfect for me in every way. Every other school is just so much more convenient, both geographically and price wise.

Anyway, I soo hope to see everyone in a year!

I’m really excited about Barnard! but, guys I’m wondering, just to be 100% clear, all classes and everything offered course wise can be Columbia U’s classes and not necessarily Barnards classes right??!?!!?

I’m not 100% positive what angle you’re asking from so I’ll just put it all out there. the courses on barnard’s website are Barnard courses and the courses on columbia’s website are columbia courses. as a Barnard or Columbia student, you can take as many classes as you want at either college. you could even theoretically take all your classes from Columbia but be a Barnard student (though I don’t know why you’d do that). does that answer your question?

But why do you think that it’s odd? And, yes it does partially. Thanks.
I guess what I’m thinking is the classes that are i guess ‘better’ offered at Columbia, e.g. some science courses than at Barnard, I would prefer taking them all at Columbia. You see?

I did a program at Columbia this summer & got to know a girl who graduated from Barnard (she taught a study skills/research course) & she said the greatest English classes were offered at Barnard yet every single history course she took was at Columbia. I imagine the Columbia science classes will be much better.

Nope. That would not be true. Bigger? yes, probably. Easier? Quite possibly. Better. No. not according to my D who had the opportunity to take her classes (majored in neuroscience, with concentration in both molecular and behavioral areas) either place and always chose Barnard’s classes. And she was a very competitive student…as illustrated by the fact that she was one of the first ever class of students selected for the Amgen Scholars Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship program, from among Barnard and Columbia students as well as applicants from all over the country.

Columbia is a renowned research university, so we can safely assume that their science oriented classes will be better than the ones Barnard offers. For a student who attends Barnard but is a science specifically bio major/neuro major, etc, will choose to take all her science/math classes at Columbia. This is what it boils down to- can the student do this by taking the advantage of the Columbia’s top research university options, rather than taking Barnard’s less competitive, not as evolved classes? Or is this not the case at all. Barnard’s are just as strong, competitive, and great. If so, then Barnard is the way to go.

Collegekid29: Your post above is a bit confusing to me. You assert that “we can safely assume that (Columbia’s) science oriented classes will be better than the ones Barnard offers”, and then go on to describe Barnard’s science classes as “less competitive” and " not as evolved". Then at the end, you do a possible complete about face.

As a Barnard science major, you can take advantage of the fact that Columbia is indeed a major research institution in that there are quite a few labs in which you can gain experience. As a Barnard science major you will be required to write an undergraduate thesis in order to graduate. If you were a Columbia student, you would not be doing this original research.

My daughter’s experience was that Barnard’s science classes were STRONGER than those taught at Columbia. They were more challenging and the professors were far more accessible. I would ask that you, as a 17 year old who has not yet attended any college, not make assumptions regarding things about which you have no personal knowledge, and post them as fact.

Pretty close … but not quite either direction. At Columbia the core courses are for Columbia students only and some of the Barnard 9 Ways of Knowing requirements are for Barnard student only … other than that all the other courses are pretty much open to any student at either school.

That said I’m not sure why you want to attend Barnard if you want to take all your courses at Columbia.

Hi! I’m applying ED this year too. I live in Texas, and I visited Barnard in July. It’s been my dream school for about a year now…I can’t believe it’s time to start my application! Best of luck to everyone!

Hey everyone! I’m applying from Hong Kong. I’m head over heels in love with Barnard, and it scares me that I may not get in. I never had the chance to visit, but from what I;ve read and heard from people, Barnard sounds like a dream. I just looked at the application essay questions, it all seems so real now!

Anyone have any opinions on how important SAT scores are? I’ve seen a range of opinions, some which give me more hope, some which smash them.

@mshcm95 - That is so cool that your applying from Hong Kong! How did you hear about Barnard?

About SAT scores, I know I’ve heard a bunch of times that the admissions office looks at applications “holistically”, meaning they won’t throw any applications out just based on one aspect. I’d say if your grades, essays, recommendations, and extra curriculars are strong enough, you should have a good chance

wow, I can’t believe it’s already starting its so early and I’m super nervous, Barnard is my dream school but I don’t know if I’m good enough to apply ED, I’m really contemplating it though.

Can I just say how incredibly jealous I am of all the freshmen that got to move in today? I’ve been reading online all about NSOP (you can find a really cool article about it at theninewaysofknowing.com) and it’s getting me even more excited (I didn’t know that was possible…?)

I need to go to Barnard so bad. I hope they look past crappy regents scores… I have amazing EC’s (in my opinion) and awesome SATS and a fine gpa. PLEASE LOVE ME BARNARD. I LOVE YOU SO MUCH <3
