I just want to remind everyone that you can now sign up for an alumnae interview on Barnard’s website. The interview request form was posted today for people who cannot make it to campus for an interview. It says you have until October 15th to schedule an interview for ED applicants so there is plenty of time to get this in!

Are any of you girls going to exceed the 250 char limit on your supplements? I have no room left but have so much more to say… Is it normal to go over the limit or do I need to stick to 250?

@123lar - I’m having the same issue, I have so much to say but I’m over 250. I know they’re being super strict about the 650 word limit for the common app essay but I don’t know how strict they’ll be for these supplements. anyone have any idea?

someone asked this question on their official formspring: [for the supplement questions, how long is too long? | Spring.me](spring.me®)

it says you’ll be cut off at 250 words.

@heytypethisin, I found Barnard through a matchup on Supermatch ( I think thats the websites’ name?) - i got a 98% match, and the proceeded to fall madly in Love with Barnard. Im going to be so crushed if I dont get in [which im sensing I may not, as Barnard may be a reach, terrifying!]

As for interviews, do you guys think it would improve chances for me? I’m applying ED; I havent seen interviews discussed anywhere really. Anyone know how important they are?

Interviews can only help your chances…and will not hurt them. So if you can do an interview, do it!

Thanks churchmusicmom! Does anyone think NOT doing an interview will hurt my chances, or just leave them as they are now?

I’m so excited to ED to Barnard in the fall! I’m just scared I won’t get in! Fingers crossed and I’m definitely interviewing

@mschm95 The admissions counselors told us that NOT interviewing does not hurt your chances whatsoever. They don’t penalize someone that does not want to interview.

Mschm95, why do you not want to do an interview?

Thanks 123lar!
@churchmusicmom, I just get really flustered under pressure, and I want to get into Barnard so bad I will probably do even worse than under regular circumstances. I’m petrified of doing something to mess up my application

mschm95: I can’t emphasize this enough—doing an interview CANNOT hurt your chances. It can only help!!! And the fact that you DO an interview is very indicative of your high level of interest in Barnard.

Interviews are conducted with either alumnae (if not on campus) or with current Barnard students who work in the admissions office. These women WANT to get to know you, to find out what interests you; they WANT you to succeed!!! They are not there to criticize you or apply any pressure at all. Truly, it’s not something to be afraid of!

I wouldn’t say there’s no way you could hurt yourself. If you were very rude, couldn’t complete a sentence without swearing, or seemed drunk–extreme stuff–it would probably be noted. Just being nervous won’t hurt you though. Remember, they are trying to sell Barnard to you, not looking for a way to exclude you. It’s nothing like an entrance exam.

@churchmusicmom, I live in Hong Kong too. Time zones are different, as well as being across the Pacific Ocean from Barnard. I’m not sure if I understand right now. Technically (in my understanding), if having an interview increases your chances, not having one decreases your chances, does it not?

Some schools definitely take an applicant’s having shown interest into account. All else equal, someone that had shown interest might be admitted over someone that hadn’t, since they want to maximize the “yield” of admitted students that actually attend. I doubt an interview would actually help (or hurt) except in that way. I don’t know if Barnard puts much stock in demonstrated interest. And you have the Why Barnard essay anyway.

@notakid well seeing as this is the ED thread, I’d assume people posting here are applying ED and therefore admissions knows that we’re very interested because our acceptance is binding.

Hi girls~~~
I’m a senior from China and wanna apply the Early Decision!!!
Wish to see u guys in Barnard!!!

Hey everyone! I’m from Ecuador, and I’m applying ED too!
I was wondering if any of you are taking the SAT next month, it’ll be my first time taking it and I’m getting really anxious!

Yes… I’m gonna have the next month test as the first time… Just practice more and be careful.

Broadwaybound, I had indeed lost sight of what the thread was. Still, not everyone reading it will have already made the decision to apply ED, so my comments may not be completely worthless.
