Barnard ED 2023 Deferred

Hey guys, I called the admissions office two weeks ago after getting my deferral letter. my guidance counselor advised me to call and the woman on the phone said to submit the materials by the regular decision deadline (today) i would advise you guys to call the college asap

wait what?? I know people who submitted supporting materials as deferred applicants after the RD deadline,

okay! so I just called Barnard’s admissions office and the lady said that there is no specific date for supplemental materials to be turned in by for deferred applicants. She said that they don’t even start reviewing applications until February 1st so I hope this clears up any confusion

how do we submit supplemental materials

You can just send supplemental material directly to your admissions rep!

Here’s an email from my admissions rep:

Thanks for your message! While I know the decision didn’t go how you had hoped, I can tell you that we do not defer a large number of students from Early Decision. A deferral means that the committee has seen strengths in your application and would like to re-review your application and allow you to submit any additional information before making a final decision. When we review applicants in regular decision, we consider the fact that you were committed to Barnard and chose to apply early. Obviously, you are no longer held to the binding agreement, but the desire for Barnard that’s inherent in an early application is still a part of our review.

Any supplemental materials can be emailed to me directly, or to admission@barnard.edu. We will then add them to your file for review. Please feel free to reach out with any further questions as you proceed.

Just to clarify: Barnard’s SHARE of ED in the total application pool did NOT suddenly jump FROM 6% to 24% (they couldn’t possibly KNOW their total number of applications in Mid December).

Instead, the COUNT of ED applications to the class of 2023 jumped BY 24% this year. (Last year’s increase for the class of 2022 had been 6%, and the year before that saw a 19% to the class of 2021.)

The number of total applications has not yet been announced, I believe. Previous years, the total applicants increased by 2.3% to the class of 2022, 9% to the class of 2021.

In the most recent years, the ACTUAL share of ED applications had been inching up from around 12%, and this may continue if ED applications keep outpacing the increase of total applications.

Hey! I sent in supporting materials to Barnard AND my Mid-Year transcript last week but it doesn’t say anything on the Barnard portal whether it was received or not. Is this the same for anyone else? When I sent my supporting materials through email, Barnard emailed me back and said that they would add it to my file. But my mid-year report was sent by my high school counselor because I know that the applicant is not supposed to send those files in.

For your mid-year transcript maybe you can see on Naviance if your counselor has sent the official copy and you could also check with your Barnard rep to make sure they’ve received everything. As for the supporting materials, my rep has also told me it’s all been added to my file, but nothing on the portal changed. I think this is fine since the materials weren’t submitted through the portal but rather emailed directly to my rep.

Has anyone received a likely letter/email from the admission office? A parent was talking about it in the RD thread, and I was just wondering if any of the deferred applicants heard anything back.

@ccgf01 hey! I saw that too but I’m guessing that this is the first year that they started doing it because I haven’t seen anyone talk about it on CC in the past, but i could be wrong. And i don’t think that they send those letters out to applicants who applied ED because applying ED is already showing strong interest. The letter is sent to very strong applicants who applied RD and the school just wants them to consider their college as a very strong contender bc the applicant is probably gonna get into a lot of selective schools (based on my research on likely letters). So I’m guessing that deferred students probably didn’t get one since if they were to, then they would have been admitted in the ED process. again, I could be wrong so if anyone else knows, please add to the convo!!
