Barnard Fall 2017 Transfer

I know it might be a little early for Fall 2017 transfer threads, but if you’re anything like me you’re already obsessing over admissions.

If everyone applying could please post their stats, advice, experiences, etc… it would be much appreciated

MY STATS:
Female, Caucasian, Upper middle class

Current School: Average regional university
Major: Economics & Public Policy Double Major (depends on which school I get in to)
College GPA: 4.0
Extra Curriculars/Extra Stuff:

  • Fellowship with Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign
  • Internship with a congresswoman in my district (next semester)
  • Secretary of the Economics Club
  • Member of The Model United Nations team
  • Research Assistant for the Econ Dept. at my school
  • I also work as a hostess at a restaurant part-time
  • I’m tri-lingual
Recommendations: I already have a few professors in mind that I believe will write great ones!

High School GPA: 2.7

  • I struggled with a lot mental health issues that caused me to miss a lot of school.
ACT: 25 (I’m going to retake it, and aim for a 30+)
APs: I took 8 AP classes

Yes, I did absolutely terrible in high school. But hopefully they’ll be able to see how I got my act together and that I’m completely capable of succeeding at their school.

I welcome input and criticism on my chances

Wow our situations are super similar…
Female (duh, it’s Barnard lol), Caucasian (Jewish but that shouldn’t make a difference), middle class

Current School: community college (a fairly good one)
Major: English with a concentration in film
College GPA: 4.0, (I will have completed 44 credit hours by the time I apply)
Extracurriculars:
-Director/President of improv comedy branch of the theater club
-Staff writer for school newspaper–I write mostly satirical but also straight news
-Member of Phi Theta Kappa
-Various activist groups
-I was also briefly a hostess at a restaurant lol

High School GPA: UW=2.73 (I was super depressed and didn’t care about anything)
SAT: 2000 (CR:730/M:630/W:640)–was higher without the essay portion of the writing score, I’m terrible at timed writing
APs: I took lang, lit, physics, and statistics and got 3’s on all of them–(lang and lit b/c of the sucking at timed writing, physics and statistics I’m still amazed that I even passed)

Obviously I’m unqualified to pass judgment, but I think you have a fairly good shot! I mean obviously Barnard is going to be a reach for pretty much everyone, but your college GPA and extracurriculars are really strong. If you haven’t already I would try taking the SAT to see if you do better on that. Are you applying as a sophomore or a junior? I know that most schools put less of an emphasis on high school GPA and test scores after you’ve completed over a year of college. Lets hope that Barnard is one of those schools [-O<

Hey Guys, I’m considering the possibility of transferring next fall if this next semester does not improve at my current college. I can’t believe that I might have to start this whole process over again but I think it would be worth it if I got into the school of my dreams. I started out at my current school as a Spring Semester admit so I this is only my second semester at my current college but I am still considered a Sophomore.

My stats are very different from the two of you as my test scores are not as high but I did fairly well in high school.

Female, Caucasian, Upper Middle Class (like your basic barnard applicant)
Current School: Private, small, top 50 nationally ranked university
Major: I am currently undeclared but am planning on majoring in Psychology, Education and possibly minoring in Legal Studies
College GPA: 3.83 (from last semester)
Extracurriculars:

(at school)
-Assistant Personnel Director of on campus radio station
-Volunteer at a public housing community center
-“Big Sibling” for at risk kids in the community
-Volunteer for Admissions at my school
-Ski/Snowboard Team
I’m in the process of trying to get involved with more organizations on campus. It’s been kind of slow-going for me.

(at home)
-Assistant Teacher at a Local Daycare (in my hometown)
-Research Assistant for an Autism Research lab

High School GPA (weighted): 3.9 (i think…i went to a super competitive HS w/ no class ranks)
SAT: 1930 (CR: 640, M:650, W:640) I suck at standardized tests
ACT: 30 (superscores) (I probably should retake)
APs: Lit, US History, Biology, Psychology, and AB Calculus

I applied to Barnard ED when I was a senior and HS and got rejected. It was my dream school and I was crushed. I applied to 11 colleges after that because I was so indifferent about pretty much every other school. I was accepted to my current school as a midyear student and it was the best school I got into so I went. I like it here but being a midyear student really messed up my chances of having a good social life as they housed 80 of us together pretty much separated from the rest of the Freshman. I only really have one good friend and even then she does not really treat me great. The academics are good at my current school but I really don’t feel passionate or any connection here. I just feel very blah and unhappy. I’m gonna try harder to be more involved and make more friends next semester but if it does not go well I want to apply to transfer. I know my chances are kind of slim w my old test scores and this semester has not been going as well but I am going to try my hardest to improve. Good luck to the rest of you guys!

Hi Everyone!!
I’m super excited about Barnard, it’s my top choice for a transfer next year…fingers crossed! I’d totally appreciate any feedback or input on my chances.

Stats:
Female, Middle Class, Caucasian
Current School: Huge research university, member of the honors college, I really didn’t like the size/feeling of anonymity which is why I am transferring
Major: International Relations/Journalism, minors in Spanish and possibly Chinese
High School GPA: 4.0 (unweighted), College GPA: 4.0
ACT: 31 (superscore), 30 not superscored
APs: Lang and Comp, European History, Statistics, U.S. History

Extracurriculars:
-Staff writer for international affairs journal at school
-Volunteer at a coffee shop that helps struggling students
-member of college’s UNICEF organization
-member of sexual assault prevention awareness and prevention group
-founding member of a philanthropic club that provides goods for disadvantaged women in the community
-club cross country

high school: NHS, Spanish NHS, captain of cross country team, student council…I don’t know if that stuff even matters anymore haha

thats bout it! best of luck to everyone, feel free to provide feeback  cheers!

I’m somewhat similar in the sense that I didn’t do exceptional in high school (in fact, I had a 2.9 GPA and also had similar issues, although I had a huge upward trend during my junior and senior year, respectively).

Female, African-American, Middle Class

Current school: Regional campus attached to a huge Public Ivy/research-based university
Major: English – however, I am looking to double-major between English (with a concentration in Creative Writing or possibly Film, depending which one has a more of a Screenplay focus) and Women/Gender Studies with a minor in Ancient Studies.
College GPA: 3.82 (Chemistry put a serious dent in my GPA this semester! I have all As with the exception of two courses, but hopefully, I can finish next semester with 3.9 overall…)
Extracurriculars:

  • Honors program member
  • Attended/selected for competitive writer’s workshop
  • President/co-founder of creative writing club
  • Volunteer tutor for middle-school students
  • Tutor at campus Writing Center
  • Previous intern for non-profit publisher
  • Interim managing editor for publisher’s blog
  • Works as an undergraduate assistant for English professor (a ton of archive work)
  • I also had several jobs, mostly as a cashier…
Side notes: I am hoping my fingers crossed I can get an internship with a local Talk Show during the Spring (I think I’m a strong contender, but let’s see), and also I am trying to get an internship with a local non-profit theater in the summer (which includes extensive writing and producing productions!). I’m really trying to get all the experience I can in the writing department, but I’m leaning more toward writing for TV, playwriting, and fiction.

High school GPA: Honestly, I’m not a 100% sure at this point – something around 2.9 to 3.1? It was nothing spectacular, although I do recall a huge upward trend by the time I reached senior year.
Test scores: I know it was bad. Thankfully, I’m planning to retake my ACTs, and I feel somewhat good about my scores based on practice. Anywhere between a 27-30 is likely (I get perfect scores on English sections). (Also note: I suck at standardized test-taking.)
APs?: I have a couple, but my high school didn’t offer that many, unfortunately.

Pros: I have a genuine reason for wanting to leave my school; I am clear about my passions, goals, and interests; “strong” essay draft, good rapport with professors (therefore, great recommendations!), ECs, etc.
Cons: Sucky high school grades and record (including test scores), lack of AP courses, weak writing portfolio, inconsistent resume, too many introductory courses (although many were either converted to Honors credit or supplemented with upper-level courses), etc., etc.

Everyone sounds like strong contenders! But it’s actually really comforting I’m not alone in how I feel about my high school record – I seriously thought I would be the only one fretting about it…

Wow awesome extracurriculars! I wouldn’t worry too much about the standardized tests/APs, especially if you’re a junior transfer, but it wouldn’t hurt to ask someone in admissions.

Yo what’s up everyone! I am also applying for 2017 fall transfer to Barnard  I am currently a Freshman at a state university

My high school stats are kinda low
UW GPA: 3.3, weighted: 4.1, SAT: 1900
AP: World History 4, U.S. History 4, Environmental Science 4, Psychology 4, Government 4, Statistics 3, English Literature/Language 3, Biology 3

I am currently a Psychology (research emphasis) major at a state university, part of the school’s honors program

GPA 4.0, involved in Taekwondo and Collegiate DECA (I started a chapter on campus this year)

Currently planning to take the ACT in February and it’s nice to know there’s some battle buddies out here HAHA

Hey! I’ll be applying as a transfer for Fall 2017 just like you girls.

Here are my stats!

Sex: Female (duh)
Race/Ethnicity: Chinese
Nationality: American
Social status: Upper Middle Class
Current School: Private, medium sized loosely religious school, #2 in its state. I am a member of the school’s Honors College.
Grade Level: Freshman
Major: Biology on the pre-veterinary track
Minors: Women/Gener Studies, Human-Animal Relationships (unique to my school)
High School GPA: 3.754 (weighted)
College GPA to date: 3.363
ACT: 30
APS: I have 3 out of the 8-10 that my high school offered before I graduated.

Extracurriculars:
-Writer for online college magazine
-Tour guide and overnight host at my college
-Inclusiveness Committee member under Housing & Residence Life
-Member of Wildlife Organization on campus
-Member of an equality organization on campus
-When at home, I continue to volunteer regularly at a local vet clinic.

I applied to Barnard RD as a senior in HS. I was rejected and cried so hard that I popped a blood vessel in my eye. I do love and am thankful for the school I attend now, but Barnard will always be my dream school. I’m a feminist at heart currently attending a very relaxed religious school (they’re not pushy at all, and encourage students to find their own paths thank god), but it is located in a Republican state which can be challenging. Greek life is also extremely pervasive and inescapable, and as someone who is very much non-Greek oriented it can become overwhelming very quickly. I am going to be working my butt off this semester to get a 4.0 and hopefully bring up my GPA to a 3.7.

Good luck to all of you! Hope to see you this coming fall in Morningside Heights!

Hello everyone! Obviously I’m also applying to transfer but I’m a little worried because I’ve only been at my current school for a semester and I don’t have many extracurriculars. I don’t want to make excuses but my school doesn’t have many opportunities for internships that stand out on an application. But I was super involved in high school and had lots of leadership positions so I’m hoping that will help. Barnard is my dream, I applied last year RD and was waitlisted then rejected and it was heartbreaking, but I’m hoping I can make the jump from waitlist to accepted this year! And if you guys have any advice to get involved with meaningful organizations, etc. to make my application more attractive, I would love that!
Also, at my school, your advisor is one of your professors and my advisor and I get along really well, which I’m super grateful for. But I’m just scared I’m totally going to offend her when I have to tell her I’m transferring and ask for a letter of rec!! Any suggestions??

@clairepritch I totally get where you’re coming from! I was super stumped on how to find ECs and internships, too, because there are only ~15 official clubs on my current campus; however, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with doing anything outside of school. For example, soup kitchens, tutoring, library help, etc., and some activities and volunteer opportunities I found online through volunteer databases. There are internships online, too, weirdly enough… I actually participated in an “online” internship where I only communicated via phone and email to contact people and my administrators. It’s unconventional for sure, but they’re definitely out there and kinda hard to find. It’s probably too late to attempt it this far in the semester, but you might want to consider starting a club, too, if that’s your sort of thing.

As for how you will go about your advisor, I don’t think she should feel offended! Hopefully, she should be understanding, and the worst she can do is ask you why you want to transfer (presumably, you have good reasons for wanting to transfer). I was worried, too, and while some professors why, they were completely understanding once I stated my reasons. Plus, you certainly wouldn’t want to get personal feelings in the way of meeting the deadline either. Good luck!

Hi guys! I just restarted this account today, so weird using it outside of high school. How’s everyone doing the day before application deadline?

I’m in a similar position, @clairepritch (also, modern family??), in that I transferred from my first school after one term, and now I’m at a second school for the spring semester, making Barnard possibly my third school (that’s very confusing lol). But I understand what you’re saying about not having a lot of extracurriculars. Mine are basically nonexistent because I’ve been moving around so much but I’m trying to get as good of grades now as possible so it shows that I’m at least applying myself in that way even if my schedule has been hectic. (Also, I was very active in leadership roles in high school as well so I’m very much hoping that that’ll make a difference).

I just read the last part of your post. Since Barnard requires the mid term report, I’m going to have to break it to all of my professors eventually. The ones I have told so far are really cool about it. I think at the end of the day professors want you to be successful so if you tell them you’re sending out transfer applications, they’ll be happy for you. If they ask why, just be honest about what you love about Barnard and how you feel it’ll be a better environment for you to thrive.

Anyway, good luck with everything! I actually had not really heard of Barnard until I was thinking of transferring from my first school and an acquaintance from high school was absolutely loving it there. I would love to see you on campus in the fall!

On the application portal it still says they haven’t received my course descriptions? I definitely sent them though well over a week ago… is anyone else having this issue?

It only took them a few days to get back to me with the course descriptions. They emailed me confirming they had received them, but it did take well over two weeks for it to actually be processed in my application portal. Hope that helps!

Does anyone know when they start releasing decisions?

@Sydblock Not sure! It seems like they usually release decisions by early or mid-May. From what I could gather in last year’s forum, decisions were released May 12.

Whats the acceptance rate for transfers?

@Transfer510 As of last year, it seemed like roughly 23.7% were accepted out of 650ish applicants.
