@nichy99 - Regardless of the relative merits of offerings in your major, I think you will be happier if you choose Barnard. I really don’t like NYU’s practice of shifting applicants to its overseas campuses, as I think serves the financial needs of the university rather than the academic needs of its students. Especially as a transfer, it would only delay the time that you could integrate yourself within the university community. If you want to spend a semester in Paris – that’s fine, I’m sure it will be wonderful – but it probably wouldn’t advance you very far in terms of the goals of your major.
I don’t know much about the film program at either school. However, my daughter majored in political science at Barnard, but has had a career tied to media/communications – including experience with film – although her work is on the management / operations end of things rather than on the creative/production side. My daughter also has a grad degree in management from NYU. So if you want to PM me, I’d be glad to share more info – though the main point really is that your undergrad degree isn’t always a direct lead-in to a career. And I honestly don’t think that any employer in that sector cares where you got the degree – the more important thing will be internships or foot-in-the-door types of jobs.
@nichy99 – are there any specific questions I can answer for you? Have you reviewed the Barnard requirements for your major at https://film.barnard.edu/major ? But note - as you are a sophomore transfer, I am pretty sure you would also have the option to change your major any time during your sophomore year … so you are not wholly tied to the film studies major. Barnard will assign a faculty advisor for you, so you will have the opportunity to work individually with a professor to consider various options.
Also Barnard has a wonderful career services office-- my daughter just raved about their programs and she now is volunteer mentor for a Barnard senior each year.
I have looked at this thread for a while and was just accepted a few days ago! I’m so excited! I’m from NYC though and am 99% sure I won’t get housing haha. Has anyone made a facebook group yet?
I can’t tell you the exact process for course pre-registration for transfers-- but I can tell you that whether or not a course is available for preregistration, you can change courses and register for different classes during the first two weeks of the semester. And you can browse and see what courses are available here: http://www.columbia.edu/cu/bulletin/uwb/
Basically you can look up any class for fall 2018 and see what course prerequisites are and whether there is room in the course. So you will see how many students are currently preregistered and also whether enrollment is capped. There are so many classes with the combined resources of Barnard & Columbia that it’s fairly rare to have difficulty getting into classes.
As long as you are looking, you should be aware of this resource as well: CULPA - http://culpa.info/ – this site has student reviews and comments about classes and professors – so that will help you as a newcomer to campus to get a sense of which courses and which profs are most highly regarded, as well as to get insight as to course expectations and workload.
Does anyone know if there is a facebook group for the transfer students that got accepted? I would like to connect with the others and be updated on what I should be doing! PLEASE let me know. If not, we should request one
@xxxc21 Yes! I have been looking too, and finally found one! Just search “Barnard Transfers Fall 2018” on Facebook, and if you go under “groups,” the group should come up. There are only three people in the group right now, so I hope this post publicizes it more so that others join. I look forward to connecting with you all!!
@ahhhhhomg Yes, it’s definitely better! You get a campus, an ivy degree, and both a small liberal arts setting as well as a large university setting. I know a lot of kids that transfer to Barnard from NYU.
@nichy99 yes, it’s amazing. Tons of huge people in film like Greta Gerwig, Lauren Graham, Cynthia Nixon, Christy Carlson Romano, Kelly McCreary, etc all went to Barnard. Barnard has an annual Athena Film Festival where tons of the top film/media people come. Media also has tons of great alumni such as the EIC of YahooNews and President of HBO Films.
Top media organizations like Hearst, Conde Nast, Ogilvy & Mather hire soooo many communications related interns from Barnard every year so that’s a good sign too. Hope that helps!!
@NathaliaNhem Tbh, I know a few transfers who got a lot of financial aid! I think it just depends on other factors as well. But I am sorry that it didn’t work out!!
