Hi everyone! Check in as a transfer applicant. Applying for the architecture program
@KG5APR Totally fine to have one B and the rest A’s! I had A’s and an A- on my midterm grade report but y’all… I got a B+ and a C+ in two classes that I taaaanked at the end of the semester, and even though it was submitted after I got in, the school didn’t bat an eye. They also legit forgot to transfer my GPA but still transferred my credits, so those grades are lost to history lol. Don’t ask how it happened –– I’m never gonna question it lmao! Really was a fresh start!
@SeagramBuilding That’s Elliott Hall! It’s got lots of transfers in it, but just as many non-transfers I’d say. If you are offered housing you’ll choose one of two options on your housing form: “I’d prefer to live with other transfers,” or “I’d prefer to live with returning students.” I chose the latter and got placed in Plimpton Hall, a common sophomore dorm. If I had chosen the former I would have most certainly been placed in Elliott. Elliott is traditional corridor-style living (a hall with mostly single rooms, a lounge/kitchen and a community bathroom), whereas Plimpton is suite-style living (suites of 6 or so people in mostly single rooms with a kitchen and a bathroom). Another common dorm for transfers who choose to live with returning students is Hewitt Hall, which is corridor-style and nicer/more convenient than Elliott. Really only choose “I’d prefer to live with other transfers” if you want transfer community (but I can’t honestly speak to how much community there actually is –– I never lived there) or if you want a guarantee of corridor-style living, but other than those reasons there’s no advantage to Elliott.
@anqi999 I applied for the urban studies program but I would make my specialization in architecture! I love the seminar options in the arch department
@HayleyRT1997 All of that is really helpful, thank you. Hopefully I’ll get to make that decision come fall! I also came across a recent article from the Spectator about the transfer experience at Barnard, and I was wondering what your experience has been. Is there strong institutional support for transfers and has it been okay trying to complete your major requirements along with the gen ed requirements as a transfer? Sorry for all the questions but I figure I might as well get as clear a picture in case I’m admitted. Thank you!!!
Nice to hear that! I am really amazed by the arch program. Hoping that we would both get in:)
Hi guys! Applied as a transfer for fall 2018. Does anyone know how accommodating the school is to commuters? I’ve heard that most of the school lives on campus, so I’m not really sure how well I’d be received as a commuter. Lmk if you know anything !
Hey all! Can anyone activate their UNI? I cannot and want to know if that is a bad sign.
Has anyone heard back yet? When do you think they’ll release decisions?
Also a fellow transfer applicant Has anyone heard back yet?
@KG5APR Do you happen to have the link to the registrar’s database?
@liketb12 If previous years are any indication, we’ll get decisions next week.
^^ Columbia is pushing back their decision dates this year which may (?) affect Barnard, but I really hope that it doesn’t. I need to know!!
@airportlover I’m not sure how that would affect Barnard. They are twp separate schools, with two separate admissions teams/processes. We’ll see though. I really want to know too!
@WordSmithNY Technically Barnard is part of Columbia. They have separate admissions processes but you can attend Columbia classes, clubs, facilities etc and when you graduate the diploma says Barnard College of Columbia University.
I live in Queens so is there any chance I could get housing? Seriously not trying to commute especially as a transfer, and I’m used to living on campus now so this would kind of make or break my decision to attend, and we don’t even get notified of housing decisions until August. Any info on the housing situation or how to get more info would be appreciated, and good luck to you all!
@mk1999 I’ve heard that they give priority to people that live farther away and then it is up to chance for everyone else. It probably all depends on circumstance though.
@airportlover Where did you hear that Columbia is pushing back admissions decisions? Do you have a credible source? thanks
@thehoff007 It’s a few pages back in the Columbia thread, someone heard at an official transfer info session
has anyone heard about when decisions will be released?
@zdiflo13 Judging by past threads, we will hear back next week. They usually release the 1st week of May.
I just spoke to an admissions rep today, and she told me that this year the decisions will not all be released at once, but come out on a rolling basis starting May 1. Hopefully we will all hear back early May as opposed to near the end of the month!!
