How nice to find this thread. I have a 10th grader who is interested in Barnard (she has also discussed the JTS double degree) and I could not find anyone IRL for her to talk to about it.

Barnard mom here. D knows a lot of people who are very happy in the JTS program, though she herself is not involved.

She has met a lot of the Columbia guy JTS students and they have a very supportive Barnard/Columbia community.

Hi,

While I really like Barnard in general, I just have a question about the gay population at Barnard. Is most of the student body gay? I’m straight, and while I support gay rights, I just think I would feel uncomfortable going to a school with a student body that I wouldn’t be able to relate to.

LOL, no most of the student body population is NOT gay. Though I believe there is an active LGBT group on campus at Columbia/Barnard.

This may sound silly/superficial, but do girls at Barnard like to go out and have fun? I don’t want to study all the time. I mean, I like sitting around watching TV with some friends as much as the next person, but I also really want to explore NYC and go to parties/bars. Is it easy to find people who want to do the same?

Absolutely yes, cranberrykiss: people DO go out and have fun. Everything from exploring central park to taking in a show (either student rush or a free ticket via Urban New York), to taking advantage of REstaurant week to take in some very fine dining, to checking out a live band’s show at the Bowery Ballroom, exploring the Met or MOMA…all sorts of things!

Thanks for all your information! I was wondering if your daughter had any experience with the In-Residence Seminar program for freshman. Did she like it? Was it nice living with classmates?

No, sorry she did not do that program. And I have no info on any experiences with it either. Sounds really cool, though!!
