How the social scene at barnard? Do a lot of girls hangg out with columbia students or is that not a big thing? would anyone care to describe a night out?

despite being a small school, barnard has a ton of options for what to do for fun (read: new york city). most students hang out with a mix of columbia/barnard people.. no one wears a sign around their neck announcing their school, so it's kind of hard to tell. if you want to be very barnard-centric, you can, but despite all the obnoxiousness on some of these forums there actually are some really cool columbia people.
here are some things you might do on a friday night:
-play dance dance revolution in the student center.
-go out for coffee with a) your roommate, b) the boy you have a crush on, c) someone from one of your classes, or d) by yourself to catch up on reading, etc.
-go clubbing downtown.
-hang out at the bars in morningside heights.
-do something nyc-specific, like the staten island ferry so you can see the skyline at night, or go see david blaine be crazy, or to the tribeca film festival, etc.
-study.
-hang out in the dorms, be silly with your friends, watch movies, have pillow fights, etc.
-something artsy, like a dance or theatre production.

there are sooo many things you can do here. everyone is fun and happy to get to know you, although sometimes you have to work a bit harder at it than you would if you were in the middle of nowhere and had no choice but to see the same people constantly.

what about the social scene within the residence halls.. did you know most of the people on your floor/ was it an open door kind of atmosphere?

yeah!!! definitely. a lot more than i had expected, actually. most of the people i know are best friends either with their roommate or with someone they met on their hall. i'm just a first-year, though, and i think one reason first-years have unusually closeknit relationships with their halls is because, well, they're the first people you meet, the people you hang out with during orientation, the people you eat with first semester.. you know. as you progress through college and get to know people in your classes/extracurriculars/whatever better, then your friendships become more.. specialized, i guess. so it's not like your social life is limited to your hall forever. but everyone's door is always open, and people would come around knocking or leaving messages on the whiteboard on your door saying "hey, i'm going to (insert name of fun place here) tonight, wanna come?"
if you don't like your hall, then you get kind of adopted by another hall that has people you click with.
for my particular floor, pretty much everyone split off into groups of around five and is still living together next year.

hi! i really need help! i thought since you know barnard you know somehting about it and could help, i accepted tufts' offer of admission, but barnard just got me off their waitlist..where should i got-- i was gonna major in International Relations and minor in Media and Communications at Tufts....help!~

Oceanblue, you should start a new thread rather than posting the same message in a bunch of different threads. Go back to the main page for the Barnard threads, and click the button that says "New Thread"

(If you want to study media & communications, this is Lesson #1. Make sure that your message is delivered in the right place).

You should go to Tufts.

yay! I just got in off the waitlist too!
I originally planned to go to Bryn Mawr, but hopefully I will be attending Barnard in the fall.
