hi, i was just wondering what the chances of a barnard student transfering to columbia might be. is it slightly greater since they’re affliated with each other? and is this a common thing?

thanks a lot!

Borrowed from an anonymous post from the Barnard LiveJournal community:

"I know people who've done it, and it's a sad place to be--people on both sides of the street just kind of wonder why. You'll feel excited/smug during your second orientation, but as you endure (or not, whatevs) CUnity for the second time, it would all become so clear--that you transferred for some ephemeral, singular reason that doesn't exist--and I think that would be sad. Transfer from Barnard to somewhere else if you're not happy, but if you're not happy at Barnard you certainly won't be any happier at Columbia, and I think you would probably feel a bit real or imagined stigma.

But good luck, kid."

thank you!!

it's not common at all. i don't know why you would ever want to leave barnard. transferring to columbia is just plain hard because you have all the core classes. all your barnard credits would transfer, but it just doesnt make any sense to do it.

I agree with scarfmadness.
To begin with I'm pretty certain that Barnard has a very high retention rate in general... Now as for transferring from Barnard to Columbia... that's really a rare case.
Also, I don't know why anyone would do it to be honest.
I don't really see the point.
And the Core is a pain... you'll have to start over and satisfy all the CC/SEAS requirements.

I know indirectly of a couple of girls who have transferred from CC to Barnard, and I think I heard the main reason was their dislike for the Core. Barnard still has general requirements, of course, but they're much more flexible.

Does anybody ever transfer from Columbia to Barnard?

By CC I meant Columbia College, so yes, there have been some cases of girls transferring to Barnard from Columbia. Transferring between schools in either direction seems pretty rare, though.
