Barnard Supplement?

Does anyone know how long (about) the responses to the questions on the Barnard supplement should be? Obviously they’re not full essays, but what it exactly is a short answer?

I don't think I can help much, but I do remember my d (four years ago!!!) fretting over this same question. She just wrote and edited very carefully until she felt she said what she wanted and needed to say. There is no "exactly" and I think they are looking, in part, at your ability to get your point across most effectively and succinctly.

a good sized paragraph. not too long, and not too short. like churchmusicmom said, until it feels right.

i actually just completed my barnard supp. I wrote them on a separate sheet of paper , each paragraph between 150 and 200 words ( at most) .. dont write too much , they want to see that your writing is laconic and concise but dont limit yourself either and try to express/reflect your personality/beliefs as best as you can through your responses. good luck :)

Thanks guys, that helps a lot. I just needed some sort of guideline and this helps a lot...

200ish words make perfect sense to me. but while looking at the supplement, below the box (where you can type/copypaste instead of uploading) it says max 1000 words. I was thinking either they wanted to give applicants a lot of room to express themselves or they approx 1000 words/essay, which is ridiculous.

which do you think it is?

I'm sure they want a lot less than 1000 words, they probably just don't want to give stringent guidelines. Just look at the paper application, there's only enough room for a paragraph or so...

okay that's great news! I had a mini panic attack while reading the 1000 words at the bottom.

Brandnew, I'm sure this is irrelevant at this point, but I just realized that it says 1000 characters (not 1000 words), mines 600 characters too long! Although I guess that's not that much once you divide it into words...

Ummm. Direct from the barnard admissions office: they say it should take about 3/4s of a page ( i can't remember if they said double spaced or not)

I'm (possibly) applying RD so it still matters for me!
but wait, 3/4's of a page for each short answer or for total short answers?

For each..but I think she said double spaced
if you need to, just call up admissions

The common app website will cut them off at 1000 characters each (around 150-160 words), which is a little over 1/2 page double spaced.

okay. well, then I'm good so far

that's not entirely true. if you write it directly in the box provided, it counts characters which I think is pretty unfair. Upload it in a word doc and then click on 'view document' after. Print it out. That's how the admissions office will be doing it so if it doesn't cut off after a certain number of words, you're fine.

Err mine are about 165 words apiece... is that too short?

Not if you say what you need to say, Bustles. Concise would be great if it gets the job done and I am sure the adcoms will appreciate it...:)

:) good! thank you

do we have to double space?

the limit is 1000 characters actually
