Hi, I am a rising senior and I’ve been looking around at colleges this spring and summer. I have found that I really like two schools - Fordham and Barnard, hence the title of this post :P. Anyway, I have been talking to alot of people about their opinions and someone suggested I make an account and ask it here.

So my question would be how do Fordham and Barnard compare?

I really like their New York City location and more flexible cores, but I am interested in how they compare in terms of type of social life, type of student body, academics and such. I am interested in creative writing, English and psychology and have a laid back personality. Thanks so much in advance!!

For one thing, Barnard student body is over 40% Jewish and Fordham, a Catholic-affiliated college, is what, 5% jewish maybe? That’s a difference.

Barnard is an all-girls school.

Barnard students share classes with columbia students, individually and in combination their classes will be heavily populated with students who had noticably higher entrance stats on average than at Fordham. I would imagine this has some ramifications for the respective classroom experiences.

Fordham would be a safety for most students who are likely to be admitted to Barnard, but it is an excellent college - so definitely an excellent choice for a safety. (My daughter applied to Fordham that way – and she would very gladly have attended). Fordham also offers good merit aid to many high stat applicants, so it might be a wonderful choice for a student whose EFC is higher than what their family is comfortable with.

I would strongly encourage you to apply to both – and make your choice after you know which schools have accepted you and what, if any, aid is being offered – as well as looking more closely into their programs.

I will be hopefully getting back here soon with some good info. I have a friend who is a Barnard graduate and now is taking graduate classes for her Master’s at Fordham. She also has a brother who goes to Fordham, but she cannot reach him right now. So more info to come…
