So I was a sophomore at UCSC and was set on being a computer science major. I took programming and failed multiple times and also took a higher level calculus and got D's. Now after 4 F's, they have kicked me out because of my low grades. After talking to the counselor, I potentially am allowed back after I complete 2 quarters at a CC (deanza, west valley, etc.).

The only reason I kept on taking CS classes was because my dad pushed me to major in CS. I despise programming like anything so now I have 2 options. Since I already missed the deadline to apply for winter at Deanza, I could either apply for a semester at Evergreen/SJC CC and then take the summer at Deanza.

What are your thoughts and comments? Also, since Evergreen is a semester, I'm not sure on how many units to take.

Any help would be appreciated.

P.S. Instead of going back to UCSC, could it be possible to transfer to Santa Clara? I would like to get into business.

I am a parent of a college student and believe your father thinks that he is acting in your best interests by having you major in CS since it is a field where employment prospects are expected to be good. However, your father has to understand that not only do you dislike programming but the numerous Ds and Fs you have received in programming have now resulted in your suspension and possible expulsion from UCSC. You have given it a try but CS is clearly a major that you can not succeed in and you need to look for something else that you will enjoy, can do well in and hopefully has good career prospects.

You may want to take some time to reflect on what has happened and develop a new plan rather than rushing immediately back to CC. After you have a little time to think things through you can go back to DeAnza next semester with a better idea of your educational goals.

I do not think transferring to another four year university is a realistic option for you right now. Since you are not in good academic standing with UCSC I do not believe another UC or a CSU would be permitted to accept you as a transfer student and it is unlikely any reputable private four colleges or universities would accept you with your current academic record. I think your best bet is to try and get reinstated at UCSC in a new major after a couple of strong semesters at DeAnza.

As a parent I can understand your father’s wishes and am also guilty of steering my son into a major he had not been very interested in at first. He wanted to major in Astronomy but I convinced him to major in Geology instead. My reasoning was that employment prospects are infinitely better for a geologist than an astronomer and while I was confident he could succeed in the three semester Calculus sequence for Math, Physical Science and Engineering majors, 3 semesters of Calculus based Physics and General Chemistry that Geology majors are required to take, I did not believe he could succeed in the upper division Math, Physics and Astronomy courses he would need to take to become an astronomer. I still feel a little guilty about it but he is now a sophomore, has come to enjoy Geology and is doing well in it.

Hopefully, you will also find something you can do well in, enjoy, and still have good employment prospects.

Although the Evergreen website may say that a transfer student has to have a 2.0 to be admitted, that’s not entirely true. Students can be admitted on probation with a lower GPA.
