I'm planning to use BART to get from Oakland Airport to Berkeley.

Any past experiences on how difficult it would be to buy the ticket and get onto BART (with all your belongings) on the move in day? Or is it just like any other day O_O?

And from SFO, it leaves from the international terminal. IIRC, there’s a shuttle train you can take to cut down your walking. The trains from SFO are very limited, so you will have to transfer. Balboa station is best; just stay on the platform.

The public transportation schlep to the Oakland airport is more of a hassle if you have luggage; I have only done it once. (I’m an adult BTW.)

The Cal campus is pretty large, and the bottom (west?) edge of campus is a couple of blocks from BART. Maybe Humphrey go-BART will be running?

I would fly into SF, it takes about an hour to get to berkeley but you have to transfer trains. I usually transfer in San Bruno or Oakland, all you have to do is stay on the platform. How many luggage are you going to bring with you? When the doors of the train open you have less than 10 seconds to get off lol, make sure you don’t leave anything on the train. Also, the walk from the Berkeley bart station to campus can seem long if you are tired, and there are many hobos around. I only had one suitcase with me when I went there for calso and I was freaking out cuz I thought someone would rob me.
why don’t you send some of your luggage before you move into your dorm? There are 2 moving companies that take your stuff to berkeley and you can get them when you move in.

At OAK, find either AirBART or AC Transit 73 to go to the Coliseum BART station.

Then take a Richmond train to Downtown Berkeley. You will be a block west of the west edge of campus. Distance to various housing locations from [Gmaps Pedometer](http://gmap-pedometer.com) :

Unit 3: 0.66 miles
Casa Zimbabwe: 0.85 miles
Unit 1: 0.93 miles
Foothill / Stern: 0.93 miles
Cloyne Court: 0.93 miles
Unit 2: 1.04 miles
Bowles: 1.06 miles
Clark Kerr: 1.50 miles

Note, however, that all of these are uphill from the Downtown Berkeley BART station.

There are, however, some shuttle buses that run around campus, several of which stop at the Downtown Berkeley BART station.

Oh wow, let me actually answer the original post.

Get out of Oakland Airport. If you have more than 3 luggage bags and you need more than 2 hands to hold them, just get a shuttle to come straight to your dorm. Otherwise, there is a bus that says AirBART right outside of the airport and it will take you to the Coliseum station. As for buying tickets, have three one-dollar bills ready for AirBART and have at least $2.35 ready for the actual BART. You don’t need to exactly put in $2.35 since you can use the leftover money for future BART rides.

But as I said, if you have too many luggage and you’re tired, spending an extra $30 for the shuttle might be worth it.

It shouldn’t be hard. The Fremont-Richmond train is rarely packed especially on a weekend so you shouldn’t have much trouble getting onto the BART and finding room for your luggage. SFO will end up costing you about the same in fare for a longer ride and required transfers.

We’re flying into Oakland and then taking Airbart to the Coliseum BART station. My S and I will be using “spinner 360” style luggage that rolls sideways or any way you want it to. This enables us to wheel two bags at a time easier than using traditional luggage that just wheels in a straight line. You can purchase it (Samsonite brand) at Costco. It will make using public transportation from either airport much easier.

BART has lots of standing space and wide trains; I’d be more concerned about the 2.5mi bus trip you must take from OAK to the Coliseum Station, which is located in a very sketchy part of town.

It’s doable only if you can carry all your items in both hands; if you need a cart or something, you’re better off with the shuttle.

As for SFO, I just have one comment: BART truly rips you off on that trip. The ticket to Berkeley is $8.65. To put that into perspective, it’s only $4.50 and $4.80 from San Burno and Millbrae respectively, the two stations before and after the SFO BART station.
