I was wondering if anyone had an opinion on whether they would choose Barton Hall over one of the Freshman 4. It seems like it is a lot nicer dorm, but I hear it isn't very social. Anyone have any experiences with Barton? Is it really not very social, and if it isn't, why?

It isnt very social, that is the honest truth. I currently live in one of the freshmen 4. As far as to why, I always thought it was because they didnt want to leave their air-conditioning. I wouldn't either, for the first couple months it is like 100 degrees in the freshmen 4. I would go with Barton, don't expect to get in though, I didn't.

I stayed a day in Barton with my cousin's cousin. She said that only her hallway is social because everyone else leaves their door shut. She said the only way to make friends is to have your door always open, and talk to the people who go by. If you bring a system, you will make friends.

Bring a system? A speaker system you must mean? Mattd, what was your impression of the dorm? Did you by any chance experience any of the other halls for a comparison?

That sounds kinda lame that everyone shuts their door. I think I'll try to visit RPI for a night and see what its like.

P.S. What time can you go into the other dorms till?

Hey, I'm a current RPI freshman and I live in Barton Hall. Yep, it's MUCH nicer than the other dorm halls. The rooms are large (even with 3 people living in it) and the air conditioning/heating systems are nice too. As for antisocial behavior, yes it exists. I have friends in my wing and whatnot, but from what I've seen, the other dorm halls are a bit more social. It's not terrible though.... there are still quite a bit of open doors. The only dorm hall I don't like is BARH (Burdett Avenue Residence House). BARH is old, ugly, a bit off campus (only about 2 blocks from freshman hill, but it's a pain to walk when the roads are icy in the winter).

And as for the speaker system suggestion.... No. Please, no.
On the weekends I go to bed really late and I like to wake up around 2pm, but speaker systems playing at 11am prevent me from doing so.

not speakers, a video game system. I stayed on the fourth floor, if you go in by the elevator, the hallway behind the elevator. I think it was the 4th, I know it was the top one. I didnt get to see the other halls which disappointed me. The three people that I asked that were in barton all got in early decision. THe dorm had 2 bunkbeds, 2 big cabinets, 2 smaller ones, and then either 2 or 4 desks, I am not that sure on that. It had carpets and its not made for walking around in, but there were around 8 people in there and we fit.

So do people use the lounges at Barton?

The way I see it I don't want to be in a place thats got no social life, but I also don't really wanna be in somewhere thats that intense. I'm not a big partier or anything and I'd just like to be able to meet people in my dorm. I'm wondering if at Barton people really just stay to themselves, or if people hang out with each other or not.

slappy sam, Barton is a nice place, and Marines920 and I were friends there. The lounge is used very often...and also, I hosted a Super Smash Bros Melee Tournament there...it's a nice dorm to host events at...and it's a cool place to live. Best residence hall i think ^_^
