hi guys so next year i am planning to go to baruch college and majoring in a bba of finance or economcs. So i really like economics and i dont know what to expect for finance, like which one you think is harder, which one has more math, and which one requires you to write the most. For my future i am planning to go to law school or become an investment banker. I really love reading and writing but i know that i can go to a CUNY college majoring in some liberal art and expect to compete with ivy league graduates.

So just let me know your thought also if you have any experiences you'd like to share please feel free.

Economics and finance are essentially the same. Economics majors can get the same jobs as finance majors. Both majors have small requirement courses toward the major so the rest of the requirementss for either major are electives in economics or finance. The amount of writing is dependent on the electives you choose. I take economics and I don’t think there’s a lot of writing at all. There are some 3-5 page reports. The highest math you’ll need to know is calculus for undergrad.

^^^This is not necessarily true. There are numerous jobs that a finance major can get that an economics major CANNOT get, or at least it would be much more difficult without the finance degree. There are also jobs that an economics major would get over a finance major, but there are fewer of those.

I mostly agree with whiteyoshi. Baruch college requires its students to take 3 classes, such as Statistical Analysis for Economics and Finance, Corporate Finance, Investment Analysis, and five elective classes, which could be either from Accounting, Economics, etc. So he is basically right that in some universities finance and economics programs may lead you to the same type of jobs. However, if you look at NYU’s finance and economics programs, you will notice that you are better of studying finance.

My advice to you: major in finance and minor in economics.

Hello guys,
I really need some help here. I’m a sophomore at LIU in NY majoring in Business Management. I want to transfer either to Baruch, Rutgers or NYU. I got accepted to Baruch and Rutgers and still awaiting NYU’s response.
See, I would love to go to Stern and major in Business Economics, but that whole “Stern Curve” is freaking me out. I’m afraid I won’t be able to keep up a decent GPA for grad school. My goal is to get into an IVY for my MBA. Looking at HBS and Columbia.

If not NYU, should I just take advantage of the city for internships and stuff and stick to Baruch? Or is Rutgers going to set me up better?

Note: I would prefer smaller classes, getting in touch with professors for recommendations would be essential.

Hi im thinking about majoring in accounting at baruch college. I want to then go to a t14 school for law and still be able to stay in nyc. If i get a 3.6+ gpa at baruch college will i be able to compete with admissions at columbia, nyu, fordam, cornell?
