I just got an email saying that I got admitted into Haas' BASE Summer Program and I need to reply within ten days. (or 2 weeks?)
So, I would love to hear some comments about the program and since now I am engineering major (not at Berkeley) and plan to go on for grad school in operations research/financial engineering, I wonder if this program is a great opportunity to enrich my background in business. Also, is this program really competitive or prestigious?

i cannot answer your question regarding BASE specifically, but just throwing my two cents here…

FE grad programs do distinguish between ‘business’ experiences. in general, they’d want to see some experience with stuff that is closer-related to the quantitative finance (trading, structuring, macroeconomic forecasting etc), rather than the your traditional business experience (corporate finance, accounting, entrepreneurship). so, you’d might want to think about this as you look into the details of the program.

^ It is a prestigious program. Some students accepted onto it come from the best schools such as Harvard, Princeton, Yale and Stanford. If it isn’t prestigious, why would a Harvard guy, for example, spend bucks for it? just a thought for you…

Would you think it worths the money? Also, is this kind of experience appealing to grad school admissions, let say, if i wanna further study in financial engineering/operations research? thanks!

I don’t know much about it other than the classes you take in the program, but I don’t see how it can be prestigious or even worth the money. The classes you take are:

Intro to Accounting
Organizational Behavior
Intro to marketing

The only class that’s going to be useful for most finance people is the accounting class, and it’s just an intro accounting class that you can take anywhere, including Berkeley through the summer session. If you were at Berkeley for 2 summer session, you could take 2 business classes of your choosing each session. That seems a lot more useful to me.

well, RML, i think going to this program is akin to taking summer classes at Harvard. sure, it’s an amazing experience, but it’s not the same as going to Harvard.
