Baseball at Olin?

I may apply to Olin, if it turns out I'm interested enough in engineering.

So this is directed at a current student: do you play organized baseball?? I'm not amazing but I'm a good pitcher and I think I could be competitive for varsity at some smaller / not very recruit-y schools. I'd like to continue playing in college, in some form, if I can.

So do people actually play intramural baseball? If not, do people play for nearby schools' teams such as Babson? What's the interest level? I know Olin himself was a baseball player, in the Major Leagues!! That's pretty incredible. I wonder if you're following his lead.

Thanks!

YES!!! Someone finally posted in the Olin Forum! I was so surprised to see your post! I will be attending Olin in the Fall as a Freshman so I can’t really answer your question. I also cannot really direct you to someone who could answer your question. I am sorry. Perhaps you can look on their site for whoever is in charge of the athletics at Olin and email them with your questions. Sorry I could not offer much help.

olin is so small, it likely doesn’t have much in the way of organised athletics. you could be the first pick every time whenever people play pick-up games, but in a school of 300 people, it’s difficult to find enough athletes who are good enough to compete at the NCAA level and are willing to put in the very great time commitment neccesary.

IBfootballer, did you go to Olin?

Okay, well I found this.

So I guess I’d end up playing softball, which is pretty cool.
And if I wanted to play baseball, apparently people can play club sports for Babson.

But still, for a current student / alumnus, how’s the softball, and is there ever any pick up baseball?

homerslippers,

To be honest, there isn’t really that much of an intramural softball club at Olin. If anything, it tends to be more of just pickup games. At Olin, we have permission to participate in Babson’s club teams, but they still are working out an agreement to allow Olin to join in with Babson for NCAA D-III events (it’s been in the works for years).

If you have dreams of playing baseball in college, Olin likely isn’t the best place for you. That said, if you want an amazing engineering education, maybe you won’t mind that. Myself, I was choosing between UCLA and Olin, and had I gone to UCLA I would have tried out for the football team as a walk-on punter. In the end, I realized my education was more important and that Olin would be the better fit for me.

While at Olin, I helped to start the Sunday Morning Football group where we’d play tackle football (without pads) every Sunday morning regardless of the weather - sun, rain or snow. This definitely helped fill the athletic void in my life, but I never got to experience cheering for big school sports and having true athletic teams during my time at Olin.

It’s not really a big deal; I was just curious what the level of involvement was. Pickup softball sounds fun.

Thanks.

We are curious about baseball at Olin, too (another varsity pitcher who might apply for fall 2010.) I looked up the Babson varsity baseball team (ncaa div III;) they had a good season this year! It doesn’t look like there is any organized baseball at Olin, nor does it seem Babson has intramural or club baseball (as opposed to softball.) There seems to be some softball going on - there is a team called the Olin Phoenix, which may be a staff team(?)

Needless to say, a great engineering education is the priority. But it would be great to hear from anyone who plays ball at Olin or Babson.

P.S. I don’t know where that winky face came from.

Vadennis,

In general, the Phoenix is the mascot of Olin College, so technically any team that Olin has would be the Olin Phoenix. There is a staff softball team that plays throughout the summer. While I was there (I’ve been gone 3 years now), there wasn’t anything more than just pickup games.

And as I mentioned earlier, I don’t believe that we’ve been given clearance by NEWMAC for Olin College students to play on Babson’s NCAA teams. You might want to check with the Office of Student Life to find out the current state of that situation.

Good luck!

Thanks, Kevin,

Yes, I noticed that the Phoenix was the mascot of the school. Cool mascot!

Looks like a great school. Glad for any info about it.
