Baseball program at Rose-Hulman

My son has been accepted to RH and is interested in playing baseball. We know it is D3 baseball, but wondered if anyone on this site plays for the team or knows someone on the team. We have looked at the website, but would love some student feedback.

All I can share is that watching the baseball game with my son is one of my highlights on “Mom’s Day” at Rose in the spring. Great school spirit, sportsmanship, and effort. Each year, Rose has won!

Sports are actually a bigger deal at Rose than you might think, for an engineering school.

To back up what mom2sons said, our sports teams are more than just intramural clubs. For instance, our baseball team went to the NCAA tournament last year. If you want more info, email the coach. Really I’m sure he’d be happy to talk with you and your son about the program.

jenkins@rose-hulman.edu

I’m sure coach Jenkins could also put you in touch with some of his players for another perspective.

My D Knew a student that played baseball and they are a very close to team. They enjoy the coach and enjoy the team. It is a very close group of boys that enjoy the sport and the education.

I would also say plan a visit and contact coach Jenkins ahead of time…so you can meet some of the players.

Thank you very much for all the responses. I will share them with my son (when he gets home from skiing today). We definitely need to plan a visit.

Does anyone know if the baseball team lives in a certain dorm or are they just placed randomly like all students?

Thanks again everyone!

You can easily pick your roommate. My D found her roommate on the Rose Hulman (they have a year behind it) facebook group. Your son will could find his baseball roommate there.

To answer your question Centennialmom, it is random, just like everyone else.

Hey everyone, im new to the RHIT board and I saw the baseball thread and just clicked it. Now last night, I just recieved an email from their golf coach wanting to see if im interested, and to start the application process if I havnt done so.

Now I have not started the application process but I plan on starting it this weekend. Am I at a severe disadvantage because its almost half way through february or does the fact I could play a sport play into that? Does anyone have any experience with RHIT and sports, is it tough to handle all of that? How do they do dorms for freshmen, most schools have first come first serve, so will I be at a disadvantage there or do they have athletic housing? I have looked for this on there website but have found very little.

Can some please enlighten me?

SquattingDog, I would recommend submitting your application as soon as possible. At Rose, academics are the priority, so sports will not play a role in your application other than that the coach will receive a copy of your info when you apply. Many students here play sports and still keep up with their classes. The coaches are normally very accommodating as far as classes and things go, and you’ll probably never have to miss a class for golf.

As far as housing, once everyone submits their deposit by May 1st, Rose will send out information about housing to everyone. Housing preferences are first come first served, but everyone gets the information at the same time. And even if you don’t get your first choice, there aren’t any bad residence halls. They do not have any kind of special housing for athletes or otherwise.

If you haven’t already, I’d suggest that you visit Rose and see if you think it would be a good match for you. If you decide to come here, it should be because you like the school and like engineering, math, and science, not just because you want to play sports.

I’m being recruited for baseball by RHIT and I’m considering it heavily in my decision for enrollment for fall 2010. The team is actually really good, being top 20 in division III and making appearances at the NCAA tournament. The team has many good players, including all-americans. Since RHIT tries to make every engineer well-rounded, they actually encourage sports and other activities.

Hi Baseballa-

Just curious when you say you are “being recruited” what that means exactly. My son heard from coach once but that is it, so I am wondering if he would have a chance of making the team. He is interested in Rose-Hulman, but baseball is a strong draw for him too. If he doesn’t have a chance of playing he may not want to go there.

Centennialmom, have you and/or your son talked to the coach? The coaches at Rose are very approachable and would be able to give you the best sense for where your son would stand. If you don’t hear back from him after 24 hours, give 'em a call. It cannot hurt.

Thanks nic767- I will suggest my son get in touch with the coach as soon as possible. We are trying to figure out when we can visit the campus and we hope we can meet the coach in person too.
