I've noticed that my gpa is considerably lower than the majority of CC applicants, around a 3.65, and it's gotten me worried b/c the schools i'm applying to are looking at 3.8-4.0 students (CMU, MIT, Cornell). I'm not sure if it's b/c of inflation so I thought i'd put my gpa aside and look at rank. I was wondering what the average HS rank of an incoming freshman is at highly competitive schools like Cornell.

Usually, unhooked admitted students are within the top 10% (the last stat I saw for Cornell said around 85% were in the top 10%). Another poster had some interesting stats for the extremely selective schools like Brown. Over 80% of the admitted students were within the top 5%, in schools like that. The top decile is the most important cutoff, but I've seen it go even deeper than that for the really selective schools.

I just made the top 5% of my class, does that give me a decent chance?

Hmm, how does this look to you all?

89.5 UW, 101.5 W

Rank 13/448

5 AP and 7 IB (4 HL 3 SL) by the end of my senior year

anyone think it is reasonable for MIT/Princeton/etc

It looks like we're pretty much in the same boat though my rank is slightly lower than yours.

If you're in the top 5%, you will probably be fine (although it depends on some other things, including what school this is, and if you took the hardest courses possible.)

Yea, i took the toughest course load; most ap courses in my school's history, I'm taking 6 this year

You all worry too much, your stats are great.

"stats are great." is VERY relative. I told my friends when i got a 30 on my ACT and they were like OMG you can like get in EVERYWHERE with that. well... a 30 won't get you to HPY or a lot of other schools too. maybe his/her stats are great and you are envious so you thikn it's stupid for them to worry. just because someone has higher stats than most people doesnt mean they don't have a right to worry.
please refrain from telling, well, basically anyone on CC that they worry too much.. if we didn't worry, this site wouldnt even be around, lol

actually a 30 can get you to HYP, but it is in the lower 25th.

How many in the lower 25th percentile are recruited athletes, URMs, big $ legacies or otherwise seriously hooked?

german could be a german-mexican.......

lol, what?

woops . . . double post

I think you're overreacting, giving me some diatribe for a single line statement I made, you're reading too much into what I said, please don't insult me.

I concur with Daderoo... yes indeed, I DO wonder how many of the lower 25 percentile at HPY are recruits URMS etc.. I estimate 99.283% (give or take .001%)
thats a very rough estimate lol
