Based Purely on Prestige

**JHU **is top 10 in 44+ disciplines ranging from Public health, Biomedical engineering, Art History, Creative Writing, Egyptology, History, Economics, Biochemistry, Cell biology, Physiology, Neuroscience, Epidemiology, Genetics, Molecular Biology, Pathology, Assyriology, Cognitive science, Chemical engineering, Mechanical engineering, East Asian languages and cultures, English, Italian, Near and middle Eastern studies, Astronomy and Astrophyics, Physics, Environmental Engineering/Geography, Sociology, Immunology, Pharacology, Electrical engineering, Human Development and Family studies, Classics and Classical languages, European Studies, French language and Literature, Spanish language and literature, Biostatistics, International Relations/Affairs, Nursing, Environmental Health Sciences, Ancient history, Cognitive Science, Education…all top ten graduate programs according to this site.

Even our School of Education jumped to #7 this year from #20…

Hopkins stands on its own two feet, Hopkins is not just only premed. Hopkins has top graduate programs and is renown for its strength in humanities, social sciences, and hard sciences. Have you even Hopkins SAIS? It was ranked #1 terminal masters degree program for international relations in 2005 and 2006.

The Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins rivals Juilliard, Curtis, Oberlin, Rochester, Eastman, NEMC, etc… among the best music conversatories/schools in the world…

Also, UChicago was based off of the Johns Hopkins research model (JHU is the 1st US research university in America, first to adopt the German university model)… as did Northwestern probably…

Johns Hopkins Hospital was also ranked the #1 Hospital in the world for the past 18 years in a row…Also have the best School of Public Health outstripping Harvard School of Public Health for First place. :D

“Also, UChicago was based off of the Johns Hopkins research model (JHU is the 1st US research university in America, first to adopt the German university model)… as did Northwestern probably…”

Actually phead, that distinction goes to Michigan, although JHU adapted the model more thoroughly.

Underlining and bolding a lot of words does not an argument make…

I got too excited. :D

Cornell is very overrated.

Don’t even go there if you are pursuing a humanities and social sciences background.

Peabody is pretty renowned. While it might be an exaggeration to say it rivals the likes of Curtis or Julliard, it more than holds its own when it comes to the other schools.

See here for more informed opinions on one prominent branch of peabody:

Since I have no inclination to debate about prestige, I’ll just rank on academic strength:

Cornell

Chicago

Johns Hopkins/Northwestern

WUStL

Georgetown

I really don’t think it’s up for much debate.

EDIT: A quick glimpse at the NRC rankings shows that my ranking corresponds almost exactly. I’m not surprised. Cornell pounds nearly every school except Stanford and Berkeley for breadth and quality, and WUStL and Georgetown are fairly weak academically. Chicago is not far behind Cornell although lacking its breadth, and Hopkins and Northwestern are definitely a few steps behind Chicago and Cornell.

(Incidentally, I take issue with post #61. Hopkins is nowhere near top 10 for Classics or Ancient History, and its Egyptology and Assyriology offerings are decidedly inferior to those of several other top universities. Except with a citation to the dubious FSPI rankings, I think it would be equally difficult for Hopkins to stake a claim to top 10 status in most of the other fields. It’s a top 15-20 university and certainly no higher.)

@IBclass06, your post makes no sense since it’s based on your bias too… There’s no absolute truth to which school is stronger academically than the others. Personally, I’d say (in order of academic strength)

Chicago/Hopkins

Cornell/NWU

Gtown

WUSTL

“…I’m not surprised. Cornell pounds nearly every school except Stanford and Berkeley for breadth and quality…”

Actually, Cornell is #4 overall according to the NRC composite. #1 is Stanford, #2 is Cal, #3 is Michigan, #4 is Cornell and #5 is Wisconsin.

[NRC Rankings](http://www.stat.tamu.edu/~jnewton/nrc_rankings/nrc1.html#TOP60)

I stand corrected. I certainly did not mean to slight Michigan. :)

It is ok IBClass, a Michigan man (Andrew Dickson White) helped found Cornell, and he was asked to help found Stanford, but he passed up the offer and recommended a former student and Cornell man (David Starr Jordan) for the Stanford job, so they are all connected in the great circle of life! hehe!

What was it Andrew Dickson White said when a football match was proposed between Michigan and Cornell? Something like “I will not permit twenty-two young men to travel 1,500 miles for the purpose of agitating a pig’s bladder.”

After posting this, I tried to find this quote through Google, and all it came up with was something I posted a few years back on CC. That time I remembered it as “30 young men” and “a thousand miles.”

So much for being a Michigan man! No self-respecting Michigan man would let 1,000 miles get in the way of agitating a pig’s bladder! Hehe!

On a more serious note, Cornell remains one of only a handful of football programs (and the only vy League) to have a winning record over Michigan (12-6 I believe). Of course, all those games were played in 1890-1950 period, but it is still an accomplishment considering that Michigan was already a football powerhouse by 1900.

"Based PURELY on Prestige (within academic circles) rank the following the schools please:

Washington University in St. Louis

Northwestern University

Georgetown University

Johns Hopkins

University of Chicago

Cornell University "

Flip these around and you got your rankings

I agree that the fact that these schools have certain areas that they “specialize” in makes it hard to give rankings on prestige, since they’re prestigious for different reasons.

Obviously WashU/Hopkins for pre-med.
Northwestern/cornell for engineering
chicago and georgetown for econ/social sciences

cornell seems like the more well rounded school since it has prestige in almost every area.

nooob, Georgetown is not that strong in or known for Econ or Political Science. Georgetown’s is known for Business, International Relations, Law school placement and Government job placement.

Also, Chicago is not only known for Social Sciences, it is also known for the Humanities and the pure Sciences, particularly Mathematics and Pshycis, but also Chemistry. Of course, Economics is its brightest star, but Math and Phsyics shine pretty bright.

NU, on top of being strong in Engineering, has stellar Economics and Chemistry departments. Of course, its Drama, Education, Film, Journalism and Music programs are also extremely strong. NU is famous for all of those things.

Johns Hopkins is obviously best known for its Medical school, which dwarfs every other aspect of the university. However, it is also well regarded in the Humanities, particularly in English and History), International Relations and Music.

I agree with WUSTL’s evaluation. It’s primary reputational strength is Biology and pre-med.

I agree with Alexandre on this one. :D

University of Chicago
Johns Hopkins / Northwestern / Cornell
Georgetown
WashingtonUSL

Agree with above poster. UChicago is stellar academically and most people have finally come to realize that.
