Bash or disapprove all you want...

I was rejected and Ill be appealing to the University of Pennsylvania- Wharton. Most colleges approve of appeals only if there was an error in the procedure. To my lucky advantage. There was a problem with my TOEFL scores not being received and therefore not being included in the review of my application and I will utilize this in order to go more in depth about things in my application. I was extremely upset but optimistic last night and one of my friends who was trying to lift my mood said "people go to college to do what you're doing." this was truly an encouraging remark. Unfortunately appeals are succesfull I believe like 1% of the time, and fortunately I got a 115/120 on my TOEFL. I havent been able to find any information on the Penn website about appealing but whatever I'll figure it out somehow.

If you did well on your ACT/SAT (Which I will assume you did), do you really think Penn would think you're bad at English, and reject you for it? It sucks that you got rejected man but come on.

Yes I did I have been in the US for 2 years 4 months and have been speaking english for that long. I got rid of my accent succesfully in one year, and some may not even be able to tell im not from here, most think my accent seems more like one from up north even though I have lived in the south the whole time. So I do have an accent it just comes of as a native from another part of the country. And no I don't have a good ACT because of my critical reading and English, and yes I believe this is why. I know Im even going to get more bashed on this point of view but seriously man let's be blunt here:

Most minorities and First generation college students are accepted as long as their scores and grades meet the standards of the school.
Im a URM, first generation, and lived in the US for 2 years 4 months and permanent resident so im not considered international I guess.
The reason Im so concerned over this is because I got a 21 on the reading comprehension and really what Im working on in the letter trying to prove that is not my inability to analyze, understand, connect, compare and contrast rather the inability to do this with such limited timing. I thought the test was a piece of cake I just couldn't get nearly finished, I don't think in english and to expect me to read 4 passages of an average page and a half long (By the way I remember exactly the first passage was a page and a half, the other 3 were only one page but used a way smaller font and they were probably longer if anything) in 30 minutes (is it 30 mins?) and answer 25 questions. I believe the admissions people probably enjoyed my application but had a hard time thinking I could survive the challenging curriculum. But here is my TOEFL especifically Reading:28 Listening:30 Speaking:29 Writing:28 for a total of 115. According to it's analysis of my test I "have a very good command of academic vocabulary and grammatical structure;
can understand and connect information, make appropriate inferences, and synthesize ideas, even when the text is conceptually dense and the language is complex;
can recognize the expository organization of a text and the role that specific information serves within the larger text, even when the text is conceptually dense; and
can abstract major ideas from a text, even when the text is conceptually dense and contains complex language." Not too mention the biggest thing was that I had been trying to get in touch with my regional director for over a week and no replied emails, also when I called she was always in a meeting.
Also in my grades my highest are in math classes while my lowest are in Language Arts classes so the correlation stands everywhere.
Since I will be writing a letter (rather long one) because there is a legitament reason for my appeal it is a procedural error, but im gonna take this to my advantage and go more in depth about everything.
My chance may be, according to the internet, one percent; however, if this is gonna be my only time applying to be a freshman anywhere and this is the university my heart is set on and I have an acceptable to reason to appeal, then why not? What do I have to lose? Time? Ill have plenty of time over winter break, and even if it doesn't work well life will go on, but there is no reason not to try. One of my essays in my application was about how I was rejected an intership in financial firms in new york but I didn't give up and I continued to do my thing and ended ultimately doing better on my own. So you know Im not obssesed with admittance Im simply frustrated, but like i said life goes on and Im a working machine and ambitious machine. Im going to suceed no matter where I go, even if its a community college. I'd simply enjoy it if wharton was part of the process.

dude, power to you. Do all you can so that in the end, even if you don't make it, you'll have given it your all.

No regrets.

thanks I appreciate your support, I really do.

Might as well try, but don't expect anything to happen. I doubt they rejected you based on that.

no, you don't get accepted to wharton with 21 act. sorry, but otherwise it'll just be unfair to all those brilliant students who share your fate

btw, toefl tells nothing about how prepared you are for an ivy. it should be easy if you have lived in us for 2 years. i've got 115 in toefl too with sat reading over 700 and i still don't think i'll get into upenn cas

gd luck

Like you said, you might as well try, even if the odds aren't very good.

I won't encourage nor discourage you to appeal, but I do disapprove of your reasoning. No matter what the excuse is for your low ACT score, the fact still remains that your application, perhaps due to your English skills (which speak for themselves in your posts), is not the strongest. Or if you are adequately proficient in English, then you should have taken the ACT again since you could better gauge the time restrictions on a second try. Also, how do you know that this "procedural error" regarding your TOEFL made the difference between admittance and rejection? From what I have read about you, you have a 3.5 GPA and "2 honors" which you claim is "not good at [your] school," so what exactly is strong about your application? Starting a small hedge fund does not earn you a spot in the University of Pennsylvania, by the way. Good luck with your appeal, but for your sake, don't get your hopes up.

Best of luck, but don't get your hopes up.

I think you misunderstood my post man.

I have taken all gifted, APs and IBs, and honors. Only 2 honors which is the worse out the four. My school has college prep, then honors, then gifted, then APs or IBs.

21/3.5? I doubt your app even made it to the committee. I would just apply to a bunch of other schools and not dwell on your ED result.
