Basic (possibly stupid) question: calculating major GPA

So I tried to do a search function, but nothing popped up on this. I know GPA is an important factor in grad school, but not THE most important factor, but I'm still curious how to calculate it since my major GPA is significantly higher than my cumulative (3.25 cumulative).

So, possibly stupid, but does the major GPA only include courses from those with the prefix as your major? Like for bio majors, biology is included, but, say, chemistry is excluded? Or is the major GPA calculated by adding together all the courses required for a degree from that school, minus General Ed (say, inorganic chem, o. chem, biochem, bio, physics, etc)?

Also, if you're taking courses for a program you're applying to (say, materials science for a biomaterials PhD program) that doesn't apply directly to your major, is that inclusive? (Don't think so on this one, but I just figured I'd ask)

Thanks for the help!

You just use the credits and GPA for the classes that counted toward the completion of a major.

Call your registrar, or just order a copy of your transcript. The overwhelming majority of colleges and universities calculate the Major GPA using their own systems and put it right there on the transcript.
