basic question

what's the difference between a social science course and a history course?

History is history, the study of the past. Social science is the study of society and social behavior. History is a social science.

Social science also encompasses fields such as antropology, behavioral science (psychology, sociology), economics, philosophy (although some would disagree with this), and political science. Basically, what romanigypsyeyes said.

"History is a social science."

That's what I thought. So if a college requires you to take 3 years of history and recommends 4 years of social sciences, then those 3 years of history would count.

^ Yes.

Social science is a broad term that includes history, sociology, government, economics, psychology...

Yep.. That's why for my state's best diploma I have to take 3 Social Studies classes, but 2 of them need to be HISTORY or Geography, so I can't take Governemnt & Econ, Sociology, and Psychology. I have to take Government & Econ, US History, and World History or Geography.. Then I can take Sociology and or Psychology for an elective

Where I live, to graduate, you need 3 social sciences, and 3 are history (global history 1&2 and US History). The other two are government and economics (both half credit, semester long courses).
