I'm reading all the chances threads on here, and I see that people have TONS of leadership, and sustained involvement in many activities (all 4 years of high school). i've been in the ecology club for 2 years (no leadership there), debate team for two years (no leadership there), NHS for two years (Vice president), and math and science honor societies for two years (no leadership there).
Other extracurricular stuff are volunteering (150+ hours), organizing a clothing drive, some work experience (unpaid intern), working with kids at a science tutoring place, stage dancer for 10 years, winning a few awards, blah blah blah...

i want to apply to NYU. would the lack of leadership really hurt me, considering my unweighted GPA is 3.6, weighted is 4.3, and SAT score is 2100?

IMO leadership doesn't mean as much so long as you're involved in the club and do more than just attend the meetings. your extracurriculars look pretty good to me =X when you start typing "blah, blah, blah..." after a long list of ec's that probably means that you're okay lol.

Not a problem at NYU.

You still have your senior year, don't you? Try to deepen your involvement in one or more of your clubs by going for a position in them. Sometimes, though, those without official position names are the most important people in the club, and you can show that in your application (essays, etc.).

okay, i had NO leadership until my senior year
so here is what i did:
i contacted the community service director at my school, and she helped me put on a holiday fundraiser. i raised 6-7000 $ of toys for kids i volunteered with.
so pretty much that really helped me. you should do something like that. it's quick, not too hard, and definitely something to brag about =)

I'm kind of in the same boat as you, as I didn't start most of my EC's til junior year. If we show the adcoms that we were an effect on the EC or, perhaps more importantly, the EC was an effect on us, I think we will be alright. I think there are other ways to display leadership besides "leadership positions." Personally, I think your community service and organizing a clothing drive shows a lot of leadership. And I'm sure there is some anecdotal experience you could write about in your essay that gives the adcoms the idea that you have leadership potential. Also, just because you're not president of every one of your clubs doesn't mean you're not a leader in those clubs.

Colleges want to see passion and commitment in EC's, and if it's there, you will be able show it, leadership positions or no leaderxship positions.

yea like kyledavid said, if you still have senior year left you need to go for broke and try to become the leader of one of those clubs, or start something else up yourself -- i think you have terrific extracurriculars, but if you're looking for leadership then you sitll have a bunch of time left!
