can anyone reccommend any bass-baritone songs that arent overly done? could be ballad or uptempo.

If you do it right, who cares how many times it has been done. My son did “If Ever I would Leave You” and “She Loves Me”. It worked out well.

I have always liked “Lonely Room” from Oklahoma.

Off the top of my head…

This Can’t be Love
Lucky to be Me
Lonely Town
Mama, A Rainbow
River in the Rain
People Will Say We’re in Love (Curly verse)
If I Loved You (segment of Billy’s section)
I’ve Never Been in Love Before (Sky’s verse)
Lucy’s Laugh
Blue Horizon
You Mustn’t Kick it Around
Old Devil Moon

Some of these require a strong upper extension, generally to a G# or A, or sit in a slightly higher place throughout, but bass/baritone students of mine have used these successfully. Not all of the titles above sit higher, just a few.

My Name from Oliver. Kinda dark, fun to act through. S used it to audition for Sweeney Todd.

As long as you avoid the current Broadway hits, you should be OK. Remember there are significantly fewer basses and baritones auditioning anyway.

Anything Petruchio sings in “Kiss Me Kate” is good for auditions. In fact, if you research what shows Alfred Drake and Howard Keel starred in, you can find plenty of “legit” baritone repertoire. Other songs listed as baritone songs are really character songs that could show off your acting but not your voice.

Thank You so much for the suggestions! I think I might go with lucy’s laugh as one of them. The song is beautiful. Is that one of the songs that extend to a G# or A?

I think Lucy’s Laugh may go to a G or G# at the end. I don’t have the music in front of me right now.

I am pretty sure you can buy the song on new musical theatre . com (remove the spaces) or directly on the Kooman and Dimond website.
