Bates 2022 RD

Class of 2022 overall admit rate: 17.8%. Total amount of students enrolled: 553. That is huge usually class are around 480ish.

When Bates eliminated the supplement this year and applications shot up they expected their yield to drop a bit and admitted accordingly. Unexpectedly yield increased and they ended up overenrolled. There’s no way to know for sure but if the number of applications stays high this coming year I would expect the admit rate to fall again. With a big freshman class to digest they’ll have to be conservative with the number they take for the next few years.

@Sue22 Agree, I expect it will drop in the 11-15% range…unfortunately for my daughter!

I think the biggest hit will be to transfers. There’s no way Bates will be taking anyone else into this class.

To my knowledge, Bates has been admitting a class of 500, more or less, for the last few years. I expect a couple more to fall away before the start of the year, because summer melt can still occur. But yes, this is a big class.

How are they housing the extra students? Triples? Moving seniors off campus?

I don’t think triples are happening. Seniors are moving off campus I believe.

I know they pledged not to have it affect freshmen. The last thing I heard, a couple of months ago, they were looking into how to maximize additional spaces available to the college. The school had been working toward discouraging off-campus apartments but I think (as @Lindagaf notes) they’ll have to put that plan on hold and allow more kids, particularly those coming back from a break, to move off campus. Usually there are some extra spot on campus due to kids being away for the semester or other reasons. I’m sure they’ll try to Tetris as many kids as possible into campus housing.
