Hello all. Looked like no one made a Bates RD 2021 thread yet, so I thought I’d go ahead. Male applying from Western New York. GPA ~3.9, submitted 30 comp. ACT score. Biology major!

Gpa 3.7
CS Major
Anybody know when decisions came out last year? Looks like late march from the 2020 thread.
Applied to Bates RD, and I’m so happy about it! I’m touring during February break
Girl from a NY competitive public high school in the suburbs - we don’t do class rank
32 ACT
3.8 unweighted GPA out of 4.0
My midyear grade report from this year is the highest it’s been in my entire high school career
5 APs by the time I graduate, the rest of my schedule is honors/advanced classes
I applied undecided, but I am interested in a Politics major with a concentration in Identities and Interests, English with a concentration in Creative Writing, and a Music minor.
I had an interview with a local alum as well as an interview with a longtime family friend who is heavily involved in the Bates community. He suggested that I interview with Admissions when I visit soon, so I plan to interview for a third time!
Lots of ECs because I love keeping myself busy with my passions. You can look back on my profile to see them listed on other threads if you’re curious.
Well, I’m excited/nervous for Decision Day! I am stoked to visit campus, and I have a great gut feeling about Bates, so if accepted, I could really end up there. Best of luck to everyone!
How do you get notified about your selection or admission? Plz tell me I am very excited.
Email, I’m assuming. Along with a letter in the mail, both around late March, right? @JolieJolie
In the portal.
Anybody else interview with Bates already? I think mine went pretty well so I’m hoping its a factor in admission.
Anyone know the date that admissions decisions tend to come out? It says “by April 1st” on the website but I assume that they come out earlier
According to last years posts, email decisions were released March 21st. Hope that helps. @bluenette23
Ive requested an interview twice. I’m still waiting on mine
@cody27 Does an Interview matter alot?
I’m an international hopeful of a Bates acceptance. Would be a dream to attend tbh
@namelessmonster I’ve heard that Bates puts a little more emphasis on interviews than other peer institutions. Not to say that it would reflect badly on you if you cannot do one, but that the impression of the interviewer does have weight in admissions.
@cody27 I had to request mine twice, though that was partially likely due my request being sent directly before Christmas break. Right now I think they’re on winter break, so that may have an effect. if you go 15+ days without hearing back, either resubmit (it worked for me) or probably better, contact admissions.
I don’t remember having to request one per se, just schedule it along with my campus tour.
How did you think your interview went? Mine was pretty relaxed, actually more so then that other institutions ( Kenyon comes to mind )
@Nesthemonster
@Nesthemonster I have to request an interview, right?
@realperson2990 My interview went well, however I already had a professional relationship with my alum interviewer so there were many things we didn’t have to cover, so I would say it was probably an atypical experience. To be honest, I really get a “human” feel from bates more so than from any of the other colleges I applied to, especially in comparison to my Ed1 application to Middlebury (not to say the experience was bad, but I guess it just felt a lot more institutional to me). The Bates people just seemed really willing to work with me, especially on a few key issues.
@namelessmonster read their information on interviews on their site:
http://www.bates.edu/admission/apply/interviews/
But yes, at this point you would need to fill out the form to request an interview and see if there’s an interviewer a valuable near you.
Gosh, if it makes anyone feel better, we sat in the car for 4 hours to interview at Bates and it didn’t go well! They were training someone so brought this third, very nervous-looking person into the room to “observe,” which of course, made everything awkward both for my child and for the young, recently graduated interviewer. The interviewer just read his questions instead of conversing. It’s hard to think of clever, interesting answers when someone is “observing” you from the corner and where my child is usually fun to talk to and funny in these things she just felt strange about it. IMO they should have made it a 3-way conversation, which would have made it feel much more natural. Instead, they just made my child more nervous. So Bates isn’t perfect. They did give us a nice lunch though. I really like the school despite this hiccup and hope they realize it was their own wrench that was thrown into my child’s experience of the Bates interview. I’ve often wanted to leave feedback about this but they’ve never asked and I don’t want to flag our family as complainers–which we are not. It feels a little better to vent here about it though!
you should probably write to them and let them know, as a concerned parent.
No^
@redpoodles that is frustrating, but I think any decent admissions office (like Bates) knows that a new interviewer will not bring out the best in a prospective student. Your daughter’s interview will be put into context.
