I believe the CDS WL accepted #s show how many enrolled from the WL, not how many WL folks were asked if they wanted to enroll. The numbers are still small. But in the year when 4 enrolled from the WL, there were probably a few more than that who “got the call”.
I am not sure that is correct. Either way, the number is really small. The CDS uses different words for different outcomes.
“applied” vs “admitted” vs “enrolled”.
The CDS specifically uses the word “admitted”. Either way, the number is infinitesimally small. For the class of 2025, the CDS “admitted” is 2. For the class of 2024, it is 4.
Those students should be included in the total “admitted” category.
A note of encouragement to all of those waitlisted: Don’t take this result as a sign. I’ve shared this many times before: a couple of years ago my D was WL’d at Bates, admitted to Williams, Midd (was deferred ED1), and Colby, denied at Bowdoin and Wesleyan. AOs are truly shaping the class in RD. With so many qualified applicants, it’s impossible to predict what each school needs to round out their classes from one year to the next.
does anyone know when they send the financial aid estimate out? In the portal there was a letter about my need-based aid but nothing that actually had the breakdown of how much it would cost.
Congratulations to your daughter! Do you mind sharing her stats?
Sorry, what is the 700? New to all of this and not sure what you mean? Last year 700 were on the waitlist and 4 were ultimately accepted off of it?
See section C2 of the link above. It gives exact numbers.
Here’s a screenshot:
Sorry for taking the thread off track. Let’s stick to congratulations for the newest Bobcats😃
Those waitlist numbers are higher than normal, no doubt due to the pandemic. Bates FAQ tells you over the last five years the average number who accept a place on waitlist is just over 800 and the average accepted from the waitlist is 22. I looked at the numbers and that seems accurate. Last year was not a normal year.
Not sure if you saw my post above, but I’ll copy from that. All numbers come directly from their published Common Data Sets:
“2 students were accepted from the waitlist last year, '21-22. The year before, 4 were accepted in '20-'21. In the '18-'19 cycle, 0 were accepted. 42 were taken off the waitlist in '19-'20, not too surprising given the pandemic.”
Having a look back further, for ‘17-‘18, 7 were admitted from waitlist. So the average of 22 over five years comes from the 42 admitted in ‘19-20.
Have a look at their FAQ, which discusses when FA comes out. Frequently Asked Questions | Admission | Bates College
You might need to call the FA office.
What’s your question?
It appears, much like the fate of Schrodinger’s cat, you posted you were both rejected and accepted on this thread.
3.96 UW GPA
Attends small Waldorf school in ME
No APs or honors classes offered at her school
Did not submit SAT scores
Plays violin, runs XC, nordic skis, plays ultimate frisbee. No varsity sports offered at her school
Lots of community service

Had a great interview
lol I don’t think I said I was rejected on this thread
Also waitlisted. We did not visit, but attended several virtual sessions.
D was waitlisted.
We weren’t able to visit in person but she did the virtual tour and a college fair they were part of. They didn’t have interviews available by the time she decided to apply.
I got in, and my friend was just taken off the waitlist about a week ago, so people who are waitlisted don’t fret!
Just out of curiosity, are you and your friend both full pay? I know Bates is need aware, and I’m trying to gauge whether my daughter should feel comfortable using her ED card there.
I believe Bates is beed blind for US citizens.
Did you find that information on their website? They are up front about being need aware for internationals and the waitlist, but I can’t seem to find any information on how they evaluate domestic ED and RD applicants (which usually means need aware as well). My D really likes Bates, but I’m hesitant to let her use her ED if the odds are stacked against her before they even read her application. If she gets serious about applying, I’ll probably have her email admissions to be sure.
I was full pay, but my friend was not. She ended up turning down the WL offer b/c of the aid.
