Is Bates College highly selective?

do you think of admissions rate of 24% highly selective? I do.

Eeekkkkk, that is highly selective. Thank you.

Now I am scared on applying to Bates. I am a very involved student with good grades but still I am scared to apply. Bates sounds like a good school but I don’t want to get another letter of rejection. @jkeil911

Rejection hurts, particularly with students who aren’t accustomed to not getting what they want–in grades, prizes, letters of rec, etc. You might even feel you’ve worked sooooo hard to get what you want that you should. Life doesn’t work that way. If it’s worth having it probably means you won’t get it every time.

Learn to think of rejection as the rejector’s loss, OP, and then go out and pursue another opportunity. If you’re not getting rejected in academia then you’re missing out on opportunities. Just keep applying and you’ll get some of those opportunities.

Bates is a good school. So is Mount Holyoke. You can get an excellent education at either one, but there are at least 50 schools in that category.

Have you considered whether your family can afford any of the schools to which you’ve applied or might apply?

I like the Bates culture, its more supportive than many of the other selective New England LACs. It was also one of the first “test optional” colleges. They have a “short term” in the spring which is kind of unique, and a senior thesis is a big part of their curriculum (it is required for most majors).

Note that unless it has been added recently, Bates is one of the few New England LACs that does not have a formal Computer Science major.

I know nothing about Mt. Holyoke, so I can’t compare.

If you remove recruited athletes and legacy applicants what do you figure the acceptance rate is?

@jkeil911 I dont thinkmy family will be le to afford to pay all of my college expenses. I did talk to my teacher and have decided to apply to mount Holyoke for ED-II

I just need my supplemental essay and a couple more recommendations and I should be set…I’m hoping and wishing for the best for this venture :)>-

You can’t generalize anymore as to whether schools are highly competitive or not. 24% is considered Most Selective but you need to see which demographic bucket applies to you. More women are applying to college than men, so acceptance rates for women are lower and lowest for women without strong EC’s or some athletic hooks.
Bates College is very selective. Its a top tier NESCAC school. Its 2015 RD admit rate was 17.8%. Think thats low? It is.
