your unweighted gpa is pretty low, and that c in ap lit is not going to help you, especially with social science majors. I don’t know rigorous your schedule was for the last three years, but if you’ve taken at least 8 ap classes throughout hs that low unweighted gpa will be forgiven a little. your ec’s are pretty unique - investico is a good one - and they relate to your academic interests, so that’s good. your essay topic doesn’t sound bad, but like you said, a little bit basic, so that probably won’t give you a major boost. all in all, I’d probably say that it’s a high match/low reach, but bates looks a lot at grades and that’s probably your weakest area so that could be a problem.

also, there’s really no point in posting chances threads after you’ve applied - it’s in the admissions officer’s hands now, and there’s nothing we can change.

@lacscn My schedule has been rigorous to say the least. In ninth grade, I took all standard classes.

In tenth grade, I took five honors classes, gym and accounting. Regular accounting 1 and regular accounting 2 are all we have to offer.

In eleventh grade, I took 3 AP Classes (AP Lang, AP US History, and AP Gov), 2 honors classes and accounting 2.

In twelfth grade, I am taking 4 AP Classes (AP Euro, AP Psych, AP Lit, and AP Computer a Science Principles) and 3 honors classes.

Does this help?

@lacscn

Can you estimate by chances for getting accepted to Bowdoin? I applied ED II and got deferred.
Can you also chance me for Grinnell, Washu, Vandy, Northeastern Uni, GW(I didn’t send my test scores to GW since testing is optional), Colgate, and Fordham?

ACT Score: 25.
English: 31
Math: 19
Reading: 27
Science: 22

I know my ACT score is low.

since bowdoin is test-optional, i’d say your chances are just slightly less than bates. good shot at gwu, your rigor is good and your gpa won’t exclude you + you seem like a good fit. fordham will be difficult. your composite score wouldn’t exclude you, but those math and science scores aren’t going to look good. if your math/science grades have been consistently a/a-, you might be okay. you haven’t taken any ap math or science classes, unless you count computer science, so that’s a bit of a weakness. the main thing is your act math/science scores - I don’t know if there’s an explanation in your application, but if there isn’t, that’s going to be very, very difficult to overcome. grinnell and colgate you probably have a 15% chance max and washu, vandy, and northeastern are <10%, but not impossible. since you’re majoring in the humanities, your low math/science scores are slightly less important, but it’s still a MAJOR disadvantage. your gpa is low for those schools, and if you had a high act, it might be able to counteract that but both your gpa and act are low so you’re going to have a lot of trouble. your saving grace is your extracurriculars, but even those are relatively average for washu and vandy where the applicants are so incredibly competitive. pretty much, you have a decent shot at test optional schools, but the rest are going to be very, very difficult (but not impossible).

@lacscn Thanks! I am honestly not counting on Vandy, Washu, or Northeastern Uni. I’m more hopeful for Bates, Bowdoin, and GW. I think I will get admitted to GW and Bates because they are less selective, even though Bates is still selective. I say I have a fair chance at Bowdoin since I applied ED II, and the admissions officers know that I am very interested. I don’t know. I’m just waiting for everything to come back. Wish me luck!

@lacscn I have taken Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, and Precal.

I got a B in algebra I
For geometry, I got an A.
For Algebra II, I got a B.
For Precal, I got a B my first semester.

So my grades in math have been good, but not spectacular.

@OldbatesieDoc I love the comment that you made on my post, Letter of Continued Interest.

Can you chance me for Bates College since you are associated with the school? I applied Regular Decision. My academic profile, background, essay description, and extracurricular activities are listed. I did not send my ACT score.

Feel free to chance me for the other schools I’ve applied to if you want to as the list is there already as well.

Thanks in advance!!

@Gpa348 I’m not associated with Bates, but a Bates Grad.
My heart goes out to you=congrats for all your hard work! . I think you have a good chance for Bates. Your English and reading scores are fine-it’s your math and science, but I think that can be overlooked. You look very strong in community service, and Bates is one of the top schools in the US for training young people in careers that “give back”. So I think you are a good fit.
I also think you are pretty good for Grinnell and Fordham.
Bowdoin seems the least likely to accept you.
Good luck!

@OldbatesieDoc I did not send my ACT scores to Bowdoin or Bates since they are both test optional.

Really? I thought Bowdoin would be more likely to accept me more than Grinnell because of my ACT score and the fact that my admissions rep at Bowdoin knows that Bowdoin is my first choice. I definitely think that Vandy or Washu are less likely to accept me over Bowdoin, but I digress. What makes you say Bowdoin is the least likely?

Thanks in advance! I appreciate your feedback.

put updates I wanna know how you did- rooting for you! Math and Science scores are not everything

But just because Bowdoin is extremely competitive and many of the candidates have very strong science and math grades- a great deal of 4.0’s, it might be hard for you

@leafraindcollege I got deferred from Bowdoin. My math grades have been good as evidenced by what I posted. My science grades are better.

I have received an A in all of the classes I have taken except for Chem, which was a high B. I got a 92 in Chem, which is a point away from an A. A 93-100 is an A.

You’ll definitely get into Bates and probably many of the others on your list. You’ll have to just about stand on your head to get into Bowdoin since they deferred you from ED 2. They had an opportunity to select you and something made them defer, so its going to be hard to get a second look from them.

@prepparent I sent in a letter of Continued Interest, so hopefully that helps. I didn’t submit my ACT scores to either Bates or Bowdoin because they are test optional.

@Lindagaf

Can you chance me for Bates? You seem to be quite knowledgeable about the school in general.

Thanks in advance!!

Yes, Bowdoin is test optional. When we went to their info session year before this past one, the Dean of Admissions said “Every year there are students who submit their standardized test scores and shouldn’t have, and those who didn’t who should have.” Only send them if they add to the story you are trying to deliver.

@preppedparent My test score would have hurt me since I have a 19 on the Math section, and my highest score is like a 22 or 23. My highest superscored ACT is still below Bowdoin’s average; I have a 25. That’s why I didn’t send my score.
