anyone know anything about bates? i am really considering going but since it is so far away from where i live (kentucky) i wanted to get some insight on the school. i visited and i absolutely loved it but i still do not think i am well informed about the school.

you might want to post on the Bates forum website, or even read through the threads there. Lot's of good information.

My son was there for his Katrina semester. Had a wonderful experience.

Very welcoming student body, staff and faculty. He found it easy to get to know prof(s) well because of small seminar-style classes, among other things.

Do you have particular questions?

i already went through the bates forum and there was not much there...it is pretty dead.

um i know that bates charges one comprehensive fee but what exactly does that include? does that include a meal plan?is it better for a freshman to live in a house or a dorm? is there a lot to do on the weekends? would a car be necessary?

i just feel like i am lacking so much information.

There's tons of information on the bates website. The comprehensive fee includes tuition, room, board (meals) and fees. They have estimates for other costs. They have FA info.

The school just acquired two hybrid cars for use by any student, faculty or staff member over 18 for a small fee. They are trying to reduce the number of cars on campus.

There is a whole section on student life.

Take a look at the website and email the admissions office. Maybe they can put you in touch with some current students who can answer your questions.

I know websites make everything look wonderful, but they are a good place to start for factual info.

A car is not necessary. There are shuttles to go to nearby shopping areas, as needed. There is a lot going on on the campus. Plenty to do of all kinds of activities. Lewiston is not noted as a desirable city, but that does not seem to cramp the style of the Bates students for things to do.

IDK about what housing choices you will have or what you would prefer. S was in a freshman dorm (begins with H, I forget the name) right in the center of things - could essentially role out of bed to classes etc.

True the Bates forum here is not as active as some, but as librarian says, there is lots of info on the website to answer many of your questions.

If you visited it and absolutely loved it, I don't think you need second-guess your instincts. And all the factual items you are wondering about are likely to be answered on the website.

I'm a believer in gut reactions to campuses, though not everyone here is. Do more research, absolutely. Go on the websites and read guidebooks and find a way to be in touch with current students. But do listen to that inner voice.
