Bates ED Financial Aid

I recently received my Early Decision acceptance letter to Bates College. But My mom and grandmother are still very pessimistic about the whole process, as they keep telling me that they probably won't give me enough money. Can anybody give me any sort of info that will quiet them down? Since Bates tuition is over 12,000 dollars more than my family income, and they accepted me Early Decision, I cannot imagine that they wouldn't give me enough money to attend. Please help.

The cost of attendance at bates is approximately $39,900 per year. however everyone is already recieving an $8,000 subsidy because according to Bates, the true cost of educating at student is $48,000/year.

Bates states that:

All financial aid at Bates is awarded on the basis of need, in accordance with Bates' need analysis guidelines, and awards are offered which meet the student's full calculated need.

Approximately 44 percent of enrolled students receive some type of student financial aid; during the 2003-2004 academic year, the average grant was $20,801 and the average financial aid package (including grant, loan and work) was $24,359.

You must remember that Bates, not you or your family will be the ones to determine your demonstrated need.

We only know that the average grant is $20,801 but we do not know the income which this is based on. The $19,000 balance will be broken down as follows:

EFC - your your family contributes
Student Contribution - Approximately $2000 THAT YOU WILL HAVE TO EARN OVER THE SUMMER TOWARD YOUR TUITION.

If your family is eligible for Pell, you may have get a pell grant
there will be a student loan
There will be work study
there may be Plus loan (which your parents will have to take out.

The reality is that the balance of your education may be in loans. Have you used one of the financial aid calculators to see what your EFC (based on your parents income) would be?
