Bates ED1

@lindagaf I see you post on here all the time regarding Bates so I was wondering if you had any idea on my chances for acceptance. I’m applying ED1 as a swimming recruit and here are the rest of my stats/achievements:

3.85/4.0 GPA
1310 SAT (Not sending)
36/399 class rank
public school in western Indiana
AP World History, AP US History, AP English, AP Calculus, AP Psychology, AP Government, AP Macroeconomics, AP Microeconomics & 4 years of German
Eagle Scout, Troop Senior Patrol Leader
Student Council Treasurer
NHS Vice President
Key Club Member
German Club President
Indiana German State Contest short film and quiz bowl champion
2x Sectional Winner, State qualifier, Team MVP and team captain (Swimming)
2 part time jobs (Butler’s Pantry Catering & Vigo County YMCA)

I’ve been on campus twice for an overnight and had an interview with admissions. I’m hoping to major in economics and minor in rhetoric.

Let me know what you think, thanks!

I think your chances are decent. ? I’m not a big fan of doing chances, because I’m not an AO anywhere. Good points, you’re clearly interested which Bates likes, you’re applying ED 1, you’re (presumably) being recruited, you’re active and involved, and you’ve had a lot of rigorous classes and good grades. Definitely decent. Good luck!

thanks!

Did you get a pre-read? If you did and it came back positive, you should be okay at Bates

I had similar stats and was also a recruited swimmer. My pre-read was positive and I was repeatedly encouraged to apply ED1. My application was deferred. Don’t believe everything you are told by the coach. I was not happy that the coach encouraged me to apply ED1and told me that my pre-read was very positive. After I was deferred the coach then told me to wait for RD since he was sure he would get me “in”. Having lost faith in the coach’s games I applied ED2 elsewhere and was happily accepted. It is worth noting that my friend was in the same position as me at Bates as a recruited swimmer with a positive pre-read. He was also deferred ED1 and then convinced by the coach to wait for RD. Guess what? He was finally rejected. Tough lesson about trust…

@“body surfer” Thanks for sharing your experience, that must have been tough, but it sounds like you landed on your feet.

OP, your stats seem good, but unless the coach offered you a slot (and you had a positive pre-read), there is definite uncertainty regarding admission. Even with a slot things sometimes don’t work out, such as in the case of bad Q1 or S1 grades.

Bates is VERY need aware in the ED rounds. The coach confided in me that he had more than a few “slots” that admissions did not honor due to financial need. Apparently this was not just a problem last year due to the surge in applications.

BTW to reiterate again…I was offered a “slot” and told my pre-read was excellent. It just didn’t feel like the Bates swim coach was close to the admissions office/process. Carefully consider what the coach and admissions are doing to make you comfortable. Don’t just hear what you want to hear. Ask the hard questions! Have the coach give you their odds of your admission in the ED1 round. If they tell you anything less than 100% make the coach clarify the reason.

Daughter was recruited swimmer. Positive pre-read, went ED1. Coach was positive, but also very clear that in the end it is is an admissions decision. We knew nothing was a guarantee until we got the actually acceptance e-mail… Your stats look strong but its good to have a plan B and a plan C. There is a lot that goes into the final the decision. Best of luck!!
