Hi, which school do you think is better. Bates or Vassar, in terms of academics and reputation? Thanks a lot!!!!

for females: Vassar
for males: about even

Actually, the females I've spoken to about Vassar say that one of the things that is most difficult is that the ratio of females to males is too high and that the guys "get spoiled" so that they seem uninterested in forming long-term relationships. So, it depends on your perspective, doesn't it?

Bates is somewhat smaller than Vassar. Both have good reputations as LACs. Both have reputations for Socratic classrooms. Both have reputations for noncomformity, though Vassar is so noncomformist that some say noncomformity itself is "comforming" at Vassar. I'm not sure that's meaningful.

As far as name recognition goes, Vassar has it hands down over Bates if you were to do a survey around the country. Vassar is a "name" school, since it is one of the former seven sisters. On the other hand, Vassars "name" for many people may be associated with "girls finishing school," which is unfair and was never true, but there it is.

I doubt many people outside NE have even heard of Bates. That's not a bad thing, but you did ask.

they are incredibly similar in terms of academic quality, and name recognition within academia. like mentioned above, vassar is better known to the common man, but thats a horrible way to pick a school.
both are phenomenal schools, but have very different feels, so visitng both would be key (if possible).

Hi, do more Bates students get into graduate schools than Vassar ? Which school students have better employment opportunities

I doubt that either Bates or Vassar varies much on grad school opportunities and/or employment opportunities. Look, if you're just going to school to find a good job (what I think of as "ticket punching"), then pick a nice public somewhere, major in business, and get a job right out of the chute doing accounting or marketing. It's not hard. Or, you can get a degree in education, engineering, animal husbandry, or the like.

Don't go to a LAC in order to acquire very specific job skills. Go to a LAC to become flexible, a better, more creative thinker, and a generally better educated person.

definitely bates.

Hi, so do you think Bates is more prestigious than Vassar? Thank you for your help!

You're not serious, right? You would pick one of those schools over the other based on how "prestigious" it is? Well, to each his own. Around the US, Vassar is much better known than Bates. I doubt many people outside New England have ever heard of the school, but that would apply to most LACs everywhere.

Both are wonderful schools. Visit each and make a decision based on how well you like them. Or, go to East South Northwest Michigan Tech and get an engineering degree for a lot less money. That way, you can have a well-paying job you hate, increase spending on your lifestyle to meet your income, and get caught in that job you hate for the rest of your life.

Sheesh.

Lol, if forced I would say Vassar is more prestigious. But truthfully they are about the same.

I wonder if people would call the guy who founded Bates College...Master Bates.
