Just wondering.. what are the bathrooms in the residential colleges like? are there attached ones to rooms which a couple of students share.. or are they "community baths"?

Also, any chance of cooking in your dorms? (any "suite-like" dorms?)

And.. do the majority of people actually choose a roommate freshman year?

Oh. one last thing, is there actually a laundry service or something?

It depends on which college you get placed in. Some have common hall bathrooms and some have 1 bathroom in a suite shared by 4 or 5 people

In almost all cases, you don't get to pick roommates. There are some exceptions - check Rice's housing information.

I don't know about any laundry services, but every college has it's own laundry facilities and the cost of doing laundry is included in the fees you pay each year so you don't need quarters or laundry cards.

Ok, ok. The bathrooms in the residential colleges vary. Some colleges have traditional hallway style bathrooms, while others have bathrooms in suites. You will share a bathroom with anywhere from 1 other person to maybe 7 other people within a suite. Within a hallway bathroom, it will be more. It just depends on the setup. All of the bathrooms are single-sex.

All of the colleges have at least one kitchen for student use. However, they are not located within a suite, like an apartment style. They are generally communal kitchens for your floor or for your whole college. But most people don't use the kitchens all that often because if you live on camous you are required to buy the meal plan.

The vast majority of people get assigned a roommate (and/or suitemates) freshman year. It would be hard to pick though seeing as most people don't really know anyone.

There was a flyer about some kind of laundry service last year, I think. But I don't know anyone who actually went for it - do your own laundry! It's not that hard! All of the colleges have laundry rooms within.

anw. just how clean/dirty are the bathrooms? (some college bathroom horror stories have left me wondering what those at Rice are like..)
and, is there any website i can go to to see photos of the interiors of residential colleges? Also, if i decide to enroll, when will I know which residential college I am assigned to?

(Speaking about Jones, though the same prob. holds true for most other residencies:) The communal bathrooms are pretty clean. There are maids who clean them everyday, and everyone on the floor can put their stuff in little cubbies near the door so there is no clutter when you're trying to shower or brush your teeth, etc. I live in a suite (that I share with three other girls) this year, and our bathroom is kinda messy, but that's due to the clutter of a few of my suitemates. I wish the maid would clean our bathroom everyday (as in clean the toilet, the shower), but that doesn't happen very often. However, there's always the option of covering the toilet seat and wearing flipflops in the shower!

I don't know of a website where pictures of the interior of the dorms are posted. Your best bet may very well be joining the Rice Facebook network and browsing for pictures of them in people's galleries, but it'd be kinda hard to find what you're looking for. Anyway, the dorms are generally pretty nice and clean (though this depends on your roommate(s) too!), certainly spacious enough, and come with cable TV, high speed internet access, and sufficient furniture.

You will know which college you're assinged to sometime in July, when you receive a letter from the masters of that college welcoming you. A few days later, you should receive the O-week pack from that college with info about your roommate(s), etc.

If your friend (of the same sex) is coming to Rice and you want to room with him/her, you indicate that on your roommate questionnaire that Rice sends you sometime in May. Most likely, your request will be fulfilled, and you'll both be sorted into the same residential college. Otherwise, Rice uses some pretty detailed questions to try to find you a roommate who's compatible with your habits.

The only choice you have in roommate matching is if you have a friend who is also attending Rice--you can put that you either do or do not want to room with that person. Two of my suitemates met each other at Owl Weekend and chose to be roommates, for example. However, the Oweek Coordinators put a lot of effort into matching roommates, and if you fill out the forms truthfully you will probably get a good match in any case.
