Baton Rouge?

Hey everyone, I have a few questions. If any of you could help me out, that would be great.
I'm an OOS high school senior and am in the process of applying to colleges. LSU is one of them and I'm very interested in LSU, mainly the Business and Vet programs, since I'm not sure what I want to major in yet.

How is the area around campus? And campus itself? I've heard it's kind of a rough neighborhood. I know it is to be expected from a major city, but I'm from a small town on Long Island where the crime rate is low to zero.

How is the business program?

If I don't participate in greek life, would LSU still be a good place for me? I love school spirit and football, but I'm not sure joining a sorority would be for me. I'm not totally opposed to the idea, especially since I'm from the north.

I'm looking for a school that has more of a "work hard, play hard" sort of feel. Do you think that LSU is too much "play hard" and not enough "work hard"? Obviously, the students know how to have a good time, but I'm not sure if LSU is just centered around that or if academics are important, as well.

I really don't eat seafood of any kind. Do you think that would be a problem? Or are there more options ?

I'm mostly conservative, and I consider myself a nondenominational Christian, but I'm also from New York. Do you think I would have a problem making friends or finding my place at LSU?

Thank you for your input!
Thanks for your input?

OK, here’s some advice/opinions from a 40-something former Grad. Student at LSU who still lives in the area.

[E.*J. Ourso College of Business | Prospective Student](http://bus.lsu.edu/students/prospective.asp)

[LSU School Of Veterinary Medicine](http://www1.vetmed.lsu.edu/svm/)

Requirements for the Business program are fairly straightforward - I have no inside information on the Vet program, except that I know entrance is very competitive.

Areas right around campus vary. The campus itself is alright.

Has a good rep, AFAIK.

There are plenty of things to do outside of sorority life.

You can work hard and play hard at LSU - the exact proportion varies, depending on the individual and the program.

There are plenty of things to eat in BR besides seafood.

I think there’s a niche for just about anyone with a good attitude.

Hopefully some current undergrads will chime in shortly…

Area around campus is shady, but the campus itself is safe in the daytime. I would not walk around at 3am in the morning though. LSU is very good with updates about campus safety though; they text you and send you an email whenever something suspicious happens on campus.

It’s okay, but not top of the nation good. This depends on whether or not you try to do internships in the summer. I know people who never did internships, and now they’re having trouble finding a job. But I also know people who do have a job after majoring in business, but she interned somewhere.

I have heard that the vet school is a good one. They are also in charge of Mike, our tiger!

Yes, totally! You don’t have to be in a sorority to have fun. Most the people I know aren’t in sororities, but they still have a blast hanging out and going to football games.

This depends on your major, as business majors and engineering majors will do things differently. I do know that science majors tend to be that way (work hard, play hard)

There is so much food around here, and so many restaurants and places to eat around campus that I doubt it’ll be a problem.

Unless you start preaching to people in class, it shouldn’t be a problem. Students usually don’t bring up religion in class. The people here are very open, so even if you do mention it, it should be okay.

PM me if you have more questions!
