Batten down the hatches

DD called from Tutweiller. Girls were in bathrooms with mattresses over their head. She said they could heat the wind and the sound of debris hitting the building. No electricity, using a generator. No internet and so we have instructed her to turn off her phone. She said the students were told not to go outside. Looking at the pics streaming on line the damage is substantial down 15th and on McFarland. The CVS across from the Mall is gone…Krispy Kreme, they say you can see down 15th all the way to coleman coliseum. Please pray fro the people of Tuscaloosa and for the students …my DD says it’s the scariest thing she has ever been through!

bamafana: the rep from the hospital said they lost some windows and awnings. D hadn’t left Ridgecrest West left as she was worried about more storms coming in, so she hasn’t seen anything first hand.

video of the krispy kreme/full moon area.

I am so shaken up. A jog one mile or so and it could have been our kids.

Here’s a pic from McFarland looking west down 15 st. Chipotle, yogurt Mountain, Five guys etc etc would be to the left just out of the pic.

I definitely told my son to get back to the dorms. Sometimes he’s a little too laid back!! He said he passed a man on the sidewalk that videotaped the tornado from a block away. He said it was the most amazing thing he had ever seen, but the guy was probably the craziest he’d ever met!!

Thank you, NJ, for your original post. I did call my son late last night after reading it to give him a heads up. My mom called from Virginia this afternoon to let me know that Tuscaloosa was in the news and I was panicked when I couldn’t get hold of my son. Finally spoke to him a few minutes ago; he was hunkered down with other kids on his floor in the hallway of Riverside East, apparently no cell phone service for a while. His roommate claims he saw the tornado cross Shelby Hall. WAY too close for comfort.

Kudos to UA: They just posted an update via FB that this is on their weather page>>

6:58 p.m., Wednesday, April 27

While no structural damage has been reported on the UA campus, power outages are widespread. Areas of the community where many of our off-campus students live have been impacted.

The Student Recreation Center is available to students whose off-campus residences are damaged. Counseling services will also be available.

Because of the power outages, Lakeside Dining is the only dining facility open on campus. Lines will be long, so please be patient.

Please stay away from community areas that have experienced damage. If you must travel in Tuscaloosa, please be extremely careful. Obey all commands of law enforcement.

A Crimson Ride bus will be available to transport students in the impacted areas to the Student Recreation Center. Please call 348-RIDE.

Here’s the live video of the tornado as it passed near campus from the CBS affiliate in Tuscaloosa

Thank you UA for taking care of our students!

I don’t want to cause anyone any additional anxiety by posting videos of the tornado. Please let me know if you prefer I not share what I find. Here is a video of the tornado going through Tuscaloosa. Scroll down the page to find the video.
Personally, Crimson217, please continue to post. This is newsworthy and this is reality.

Please continue to share! I think our kids are going to want to see these once they recover & are able to access them.

Back in my dorm room (Ridgecrest West) I walked out to the quad, then the hospital, and back via the Rec Center. There is no damage beyond some downed trees. Ridgecrest West is still on emergency power, but we do have WiFi. I apologize in advance for any delays in communications from Tuscaloosa. We will assess and fix the damage ASAP, but things do take time.

If anything, times like these show how large the Alabama family really is.

Stay Safe and Roll Tide!

[TuscaloosaNews.com | The Tuscaloosa News | Tuscaloosa, AL](http://www.tuscaloosanews.com/) This breaks my heart. I will continue to pray for everyone that this storm has touched. Go to main story and then there are two albums with photos

Thank you, Rob. Appreciate it.

Power is back at Riverside West!

You beat me to it Montegut! No internet or cable service though yet. And the cell coverage is spotty. D moved a step & lost her signal.

Her roomie took a walk and said there were some trees down on the Quad along with some damage to one of the sidewalks where a tree had hit.

Just heard 3 confirmed fatalities in Tuscaloosa.

Okay, so D says everything looks okay on campus - a couple of trees down - but she is at 15th and McFarland and she said “everything on 15th is gone.” ??

D just texted that evacuees are being housed in the rec center
