What exactly does it mean that I got the Bausch and Lomb science award? I know it's an honor for being good in science, but is it prestigious, helps for admissions, etc?

I dont know. People get it at like every high school, including mine. So on that note, it basically means you're one of the top science students in your school. It's not a major honor that would set you apart a great deal in admissions, but if you plan to major in a science-related field, it will reenforce your aptitude in that area, i guess.

How is it compared to the Rensalaer medal?

Um, they're pretty similar in terms of prestige. However, I think there is a scholarship or something to RPI associated with that medal.

Maybe Rensselaer Medal > Bausch & Lomb Award? Since there's money?

Why does it matter?

Bausch and Lomb Award: You can apply to U. of Rochester free of charge.
Should you be accepted and attend, you are in the running for up to 8K of merit aid per year.

List it on your resume. You may get some scholarship money from a competing school too. My d got the U of Rochester Social Science and Humanity Award (I think they changed the name since she got it a few years back). She was offered an $8,000 scholarship from CMU. My gut feeling was that she was offered the money as CMU KNEW she was getting merit $ from Rochester.
Rochester, CMU, Case Western and a few other schools compete for a lot of the same kids. So if they realize, you are getting a scholarship from U of R , they may try to match the offer. If it is listed on your resume, you're making it obvious that there is money on the table.
And there is only one kid from each sponsoring HS who receives the Bosch & Lomb and the other U of Rochester Awards.
Don't you think it is great for the colleges to know that your HS thinks that you are the most deserving student to get this honor? Be proud of your accomplishment.

I received the Bausch and Lomb science award in my HS, and I got to apply to U of R for free. I was lucky enough to be accepted and received the Bausch and Lomb scholarship for $7,500 a year. Plus, I got to list it on my college applications.

Thanks for the info, everyone

Correct me if i am mistaken, but a classmate of mine got that award from the the University of Rochester and he will only get the money if he attends U of R and its about $15,000 but not a full ride to the school...but i could be wrong

Crzy- You're right. The Bosch and Lomb is only good for the U of Rochester--BUT other schools that are interested in you (or your friend) MIGHT offer you a Merit Award for their own school in order to entice you to attend their school. Bosch and Lomb is not transferable to any other school and is only good for U of R.
