D received B & L award @ senior awards ceremony. We thought it was nice, but didn't know it had "prestige". It was presented so late that it couldn't be listed on college/scholarship apps anyway.

Those Rochester B & L awards as well as the social science award (whatever it's called these days) are given out to Juniors. What happened?^^^^

um are these good for college admissions? at all

seems to me they would be beneficial- they are only given to one person per class (as opposed to, say, induction into the National Honor Society) which means the winner truly stands out, and it would seem it would help fill in the "honors and awards" section of a college application very nicely.

If you were including the award in your application documents, would you simply refer to as: "Bausch and Lomb Honorary Science Award" or should you add University of Rochester and/or text defining it? If so, any suggestions?

My D received this award this past year - a very nice honor. However U of R does not have the program she wants so she won't be applying. The winner 2 years ago, top student, was not even accepted there.

Bausch and Lomb award is given to the top Science+math student at
participating schools at the end of Junior year.

It is an important award to list, since some of the top schools are specifically
looking for this type of student. A student getting this type of award is
not likley to choose U of R unless they are into one of the U of R specialities
(Optical engg etc). Princeton and Caltech seem to like the award recipients
going by my school's acceptance record.

When I did research on colleges, I found that U of R believes in "demonstrated
interest". i.e they expect you to have talked to their faculty, visited campus
etc. So there is a lot of work involved in using U of R as a safety for B&L
students looking at top 5 schools.

Some schools seem to have a curious practice of not admitting students if their
record is too much above their average and there is indication that they are being
viewed as a safety by the applicant. I do not have data that leads to that conclusion
about U of R.

MIT - Bausch & Lomb award is not given to the top Sci/Math student at 'participating' schools. Any school can participate, the high school fills out a form and sends it in, U of R sends back an award. The high school can select students on any basis they wish. There is no stipulation by UofR that it be awarded to the 'top' student. It is done differently at every school and the recipients vary in achievement because of that. Thus, Rochester is not necessarily a safety/likely admit for Bausch & Lomb recipients. Furthermore, most adcoms understand that these awards reflect a nice endorsement by the high school. There are some prestige awards for competitions, publications, innovation and original research. These are not granted by filling out a form. We should begin a list of some of them on CC for future students to consider. Maybe we can call the thread "Beyond Intel - What Else Is Out There?" How about the competitive, but lesser known ones
Stockholm Junior Water Prize? Stockholm Water Journalism Prize?

I love to see students receive awards, but honestly Rochester benefits from early contact with students the high school has identified for them.

At the state level, here in USA, they receive a trip to the National competition.

I know this might be an old topic, but I’m pretty sure other people have continued to use this as a reference.

I got this award at school during my junior year. I recently emailed University of Rochester (the sponsor of this award), and asked them which level of recognition I should list on my common application for the Bausch and Lomb Science Award.

Their response was “As high schools all across the country participate, it’s fair to characterize it as a national award.”

Just throwing that out there…

Re: post 31

The intent of designating “level of recognition” for an award is to distinguish the pool from which the recipient was selected. In the case of the Bausch and Lomb Award, the recipient is chosen from among his/hr fellow classmates at a single high school. In other words, it is a local award. Those reviewing college admissions applications are well aware that it is not a national award even if it is awarded in high schools across the nation.
