hi! I am going to go to Baylor as a freshman for the 2016-2017 school year. I was wondering what the best Baylor dorms are? Like, which ones are the newest/nicest and which ones should i try to avoid? which one has the biggest rooms? quiet or nice for studying? stereotypes for dorm??? I am filling out my housing application now. I am doing a biochem major for the pre-pharm track. If possible, I am also trying to stay away from community bathrooms… Thank you!!!
Hey Southgal!
I am an alum and I worked two years as an RA/Community Leader in Martin Hall, which will actually be closed for renovations this coming year. Going off of your name, I’m assuming you will be living in a female hall on campus. Here’s a brief overview about Baylor and housing on campus:
The administration has been pushing to have half of its students live on campus, so they are pumping a lot of money at the moment to make residence halls (there is a strong aversion to “the D word”) nice. Your options for housing are probably best categorized by either living in a living and learning community (LLC) or a traditional residence hall. LLCs are typically co-ed, have buildings with suite style bathrooms, and faculty/professors that live in the residence hall as well. Residence halls are more traditional with community style bathrooms.
The university also invests a lot in its staffing for residence halls, so each hall will be staffed by a residence hall director, a resident chaplain, and community leaders (aka RAs). The size of the staff depends on the size of the building. And as I mentioned earlier, LLCs also have professors living in the building as well, typically on the first floor in an apartment.
Since you’re biochem and pre-pharmacy, I would probably recommend the Science and Health LLC at Earle Hall (http://www.baylor.edu/shllc/). It’s one of the newest residence halls on campus and has a lot of options. It’s close to the science building and its location is pretty good overall.
It’s been a while since I’ve graduated so I’m not sure if what I am going to share will be completely accurate, but each residential community developed its overall kind of personality/stereotype:
Collins is the most notable female residence hall on campus, and has been known to be the top-choice residence hall for daughters of alums and students who want to rush a sorority.
NoRo and SoRo was originally a female only hall but has now become co-ed. Girls that have lived in these halls were more “relaxed” and not as high-energy as Collins.
Memorial is the residence hall for girls in the Honors College. Typically “nerdy” girls lived here.
Dawson is the residence hall for girls in the Leadership LLC, but it’s not a very popular choice since it’s kind of in the back corner of the campus.
I literally do not remember anyone that lived in Kokernot. Everyone forgets that place exists.
Brooks is the “snobby” residence hall that has the Hogwarts dining hall.
Texana/Heritage is typically where the fine arts students are, but it used to have the engineering LLC there. Quieter students, CLs I knew that worked there had a hard time getting their students to get out of their rooms since they were apartment style.
There are more, but that’s the main array of choices for freshmen. Hope this helps!
