In CR section2, in the passage about dog's scent perception for questions 10 to 14,
there was a sentence like this:

"A dog who did comparative psychology might easily worry about our consciousness or lack thereof just as we worry about the consciousness of a squid." lines 8-11

I could not understand what it was talking about; what is comparative psychology?
How's this sentence related to the whoel passage, at least the first paragraph?

Thanx in advance :)

Which test is it in?

Wait, I just found it online.

To understand the sentence, look at it in context. It is not necessary to know what comparative psychology is. For the record, it is the study of the psychology of non-human animals. But to understand the sentence, look at it in context.

“But for dogs, scenting is believing. A dog’s nose is to ours as the wrinkled surface of our complex brain is to the surface of an egg.”

The entire passage is talking about dogs’ sense of smell compared to humans’. Our sense of smell is so much weaker than that of dogs. Now imagine if a dog was studying humans, using their sense of smell as a baseline for intelligence, we would appear so weak that we would be practically unconscious. This is analogous to the way we study squid using our own intelligence as a baseline, then question the squid’s consciousness.

The sentence is basically reenforcing the ideas of the previous paragraph using the interesting metaphor of consciousness.

OMG Thanx kestrel24!
