BB Critical Reading

This is from test 6 from 2nd edition or 4th test from 1st edition:

I know online have explanations, but I usually don't understand what they mean? /:

Here it is:http://img831.imageshack.us/img831/3240/screenshot20120119at512.png

And sadly, yes all three questions :c

C

D

B

I will explain why I got the answers I did, after you tell me if these answers are correct.

It was actually C, D, A, respectively.

The answer is C because through POE we can eliminate A) Cynicism because the author of passage 1 states “… enormous and essential contribution to natural history was to devise a system…” There is no sign of bafflement, nostalgia, or resentment in Passage 1 towards Carl Linnaeus or his system of classification. This is why C is correct. Also, as I stated before, the author states, “… enormous and essential contribution to natural history was to devise a system…”

As you AGGRESSIVELY go through the answer choices, you HAVE to go back and refer to the passage. So ask your self: Did the author of passage 2 use scientific data, literary allusions, historical research, or direct citation? The answer to all of these questions is a definite no. Also, If you compare the tones of passage 1 and passage 2, right from the get go, you can tell the author of passage 2 is using his personal voice. He says,'I am a heretic about Linnaeus."

I would have gotten this right if I had payed close attention, but, instead I approached this questions somewhat lackadaisically.

The reason the answer to number 3 is A is because both passages note the importance of Linnaeus’ “tool”. Passage 1 states,"… enormous and essential contribution to natural history was to devise a system of classification…". Passage 2 states, " I do not dispute the value of the tool he gave natural science…" Hence, the answer being A. Again, through aggressive POE we can eliminate C, D, and E. Then, by REFERRING back to the passage we can eliminate B, and the only other answer choice left is A.

For 2, I picked literary allusion because of “pigeonholed nature”, which I think is a literary allusion?

I believe the author is actually using pigeonholed as in the actual meaning of the word, which is, “Assign to a particular category or class, esp. in a manner that is too rigid or exclusive.” Therefore, it is not a literary allusion.

Oh, I see. Thank you YoungProdigy
