BB pg 185 #3,5

These 2 questions refer to a passage. (They are from the improving paragraphs section.)

I'm not going to write out the whole passage as it is too long. I would appreciate it if you guys refer to the book.

For question 3, the answer is choice D (I chose choice C). Although I can partially see choice D being the answer, it still does not make grammatical sense to me. ("She" does not have a clear referent.) Is this just one of those odd questions where you just have to go along with the way the passage is?

For question 5, I personally have no idea why the answer is not choice B (It is choice E). In sentence 14, the author talks about what he liked in the book. I personally felt that sentence 14 should have been moved to the beginning of the second paragraph since it sounded fine compared to the other choices when I read it aloud. If you leave the sentence in its original place, it seems to me as if you are swaying in topic. What am I missing here?

Thanks! I know the post is sort of long, forgive me.

bump…

3) The sentence is supposed to elaborate on the previous one. (C) can’t be the answer because she didn’t become a dentist after becoming a dentist. (D) makes sense because “she” refers to the last woman mentioned. In context (which the question refers to), “she” clearly refers to Bessie since she was said to be a dentist

5) First of all, the sentence doesn’t sway in topic because it’s the first sentence of a new paragraph. So there would only be a swaying in topic around that area if the second sentence was not in tone with the first sentence. This would be the case if you moved sentence 14 to the beginning of the second paragraph. On the other hand, the 3 sentences of the last paragraph are statements of similar topic. So adding an example would be the “best way” of dealing with sentence 14 out of all the choices

Thanks crazybandit, I just have one more question. If the question did not say “in context”, would choice D still be a valid answer?

Well the question wouldn’t make sense if it didn’t refer to the context. All of the answer choices deal with context (i.e. B deals with something in contrast to something else). Grammatically, D isn’t the only one that is correct. So the question would be impossible to answer without context.

In general, if the question doesn’t refer to context, it deals with grammar unrelated to context.
