BB Scatterplot Question

It is on page 529, number 14, about half way down the page.

Is there a shortcut to this question? Seems like subtracting the difference for all 10 years would be a waste of time.

Also, how is number 14 on page 547 D? My choice was C because I thought the 2 would cause a shrink.

The answer to the scatterplot question is 1992 right? I did this in about 5 seconds because I knew that the dot needed to be as far away as possible from the down to up, left to right diagonal. Anything on that diagonal line would have an abs value difference of 0 (do you see why, because x and y are very close). So we need to have the dot as far away from this diagonal as possible because then either x or y or both will have the greatest difference.

14 on pg 547 is D because if you think about it, every y value is being multiplied by two in the equation y=2f(x). So any positive y value will just become more positive, and any negative value will become more negative, which stretches the graph up and down. You’re thinking of a parabola when you say 2 causes it to shrink… but if you think about it for a parabola what I say is true also…
