<p>I thought that "had long been" his friend was an error, i thought there should be a since in there somewhere</p>

<p>It should be “inconsistent with.” IDIOMATIC TYPE OF QUESTION</p>

<p>For the third one, since would work in the sentence but that’s not a reason why “had long been” is wrong. Is there something wrong with that? The answer is no.</p>
