BB2 Absolute Value Math Q...help please?

I'm not sure how to do this...absolute value problems confuse me :S. so any help would be greatly appreciated! thanks

BB2 pg. 467 #14

f(x) = |3x-17|
For the function defined above, what is one possible value of a for which f(a) <a ?

The easiest way is to probably just plug in numbers. took me 30 seconds to see that 7 works.

5 can also work.

Goal: Plug in an A value for numbers into the equation and see if the f(x) result will be less than the number you chose for substitution.

l 3(5) - 17 l = 15 - 17 = -2 Absolute Value of -2 is +2.

2 < 5.

5 works.

or like RAlec said… 7 too.

Use two inequalities to solve this problem.
3a - 17 < a
2a < 17
a < 8.5

3(a) - 17 > -a
4a > 17
a > 4.25

Plugging numbers is easier.
