I'm planning on attending Georgia Southern next fall and can't decide on rather to go with a marketing degree or go with information systems. I'm also looking at computer science but its only offered as a BS so thats another topic altogether. Besides the fact that Information Systems is a melding of business and a little introduction to computer science (which scares me, if you know a little of everything you don't know much about anything) I don't know what the course work is like for any of my choices. Any suggestions?

If you like IS better, go with IS. If you like marketing better, go with… IS. If you don’t like IS at all, go with marketing. Even with the current economy, companies are hiring IS associates. We just offered a position to a recent grad a few days ago and she turned us down. I am afraid that Georgia Southern is not a big dog for you to be competitive with other better known Georgia schools to find a job in marketing after graduation.

What can you do with a marketing major, especially in this economy, work at Macy’s?

pugfug, a lot of marketing majors from my school got offers from consulting firms and big name corporations last year, even in this economy.

However, I’m not sure that was the case for Georgia Southern. dread, you seem more interested in the technical side of business, and at your school I can imagine IS majors have much better job prospects than marketing majors. Don’t worry about being a jack-of-all-trades/master-of-none, because it’s only college, and nobody comes out of undergrad knowing everything. Besides, the stuff you will know is in demand!

It is sad, but true. Most marketing majors in this economy coming from second or third tier business schools are working in retail.

IS will open more doors for you.

ok thanks for the responses, so now between IS and computer science any advice?

bump. any one? Should I do computer science or IS?

CS.

I was an MIS major once at a top ranked school once, but quickly switched out after I completed a few of the courses. Why? The course material was dumbed down and we never had to learn the major computing languages (Java, C++). Instead we just did VB and SQL. hmmmm… All the CS kids laughed at the MIS majors.

Go with CS, but it is going to be harder, no doubt.

It depends on what job you want to do. From what MIS grads told us, you do programming type stuff a little bit for a few years but the real purpose of MIS is as a link between the business types and the CS types. An MIS manager understands the needs of the business side and the capabilities of the CS side.

I think it depends on the school, I learned about Java in my school.
