BBA Ross or BA Economics ??

Hello I am new to thread i am in a dilema. I love economics but want to study business.
I have done Three years at a CC so i'm currently 21 now. These are my two option's what is everyone's opinion. I am worried I will not be able find a good job from economics program since I heard Ross has better recruiting. I am interested in Investment Banking so basically i'm wondering is it worth basically staying in Undegrad for seven years to obtain a BBA have better investment banking option's or would just graduating with BA Economics then pursuing MBA be better option ?

My main concern is i know i will have a better base pay with a Top MBA then an Top BBA
Around 65,000 for BBA and 100,000 for MBA so is it worth doing two years in BBA when I could preparing for an MBA ?

These are my options

Graduate in two years (23) with a BA in Economics work if possible or apply to top grad schools. Would like to start a top MBA program around 24/25

One year in LSA then Ross for Three - also have completed most pre-req's at CC, Graduate in four years (25) with BBA Ross/BA Economics Dual Degree then work for two years then go back for MBA around (27)

Do One semester In LSA Apply to Cornell AEM graduate (23 1/2)

Do One Year in LSA Apply Top Business Program that i can complete in 2 years graduate at (24)

I think the most important thing you should do is finish undergrad… which means no ross.

You don’t need Ross to get into IBD. But also, unless you are working in high finance at a big name or consulting at MBB, you are probably not getting into a top MBA program with only 2 years of experience.

So essentially wouldn’t be better to do Ross the extra two years gain more summer work internships then have ability to work or possible go to grad school right after ? I feel going to ross would be a safer bet but longer and the Econ would be risk since I won’t necessarily get the recruitment of ross students ?

One Last Bump Need More Opinons I got back from advising and my advisor thinks the ross would be a good idea does anyone think just going with Econ then pursuing MBA/JD would be smarter then wasting two more years in undergrad only problem is being accepted into Top program ? so the dilemma still stands Econ BA or Ross BBA/Econ BA or Minor ?

I would pass on the Ross option. It is a better use of your time to graduate now and get the MBA. I’m not sure why you want to go to law school.

@Res Ipsa - I am interested in corporate Law and i love the flexibility of having a law degree and MBA. Plus many programs are accelerating the program to three years i.e Yale,Northwestern. I actually may be able to complete my BBA in three years One year LSA/Two years Ross program would that be worth it an extra year ? i have to stay in residency two years regardless to graduate since i’m a transfer.

The Ross BBA is a three year program from when you start. They do not accommodate an accelerated schedule. If you are not admitted to Ross for 2012-13 then the earliest you could graduate from Ross is 2016. I would recommend finishing up your BA and then apply to law school.

I appreciate your response i am leaning more in more towards just going with Econ because of the three year program if the program was two years i may consider though but i can’t do 4 more years at UMich

I majored in Economics and managed to secure several offers from IBanks before graduation. You have to have at least a 3.5 GPA and you have to be very persistant and take the initiative. Many fellow Econ majors were succcessful in their IBank job serve. Strong Mathematics skills and knowledge of a second/third language helped most of us, connections to the industry never hurts either! ;)

@Alexandre Okay thanks for heads up i feel i can maintain a 3.5 >. I was most worried about OCR for Ross but i’m hoping i can still sign up for events when recruiters come. Also did you minor in anything ? i’m debating in throwing in a minor so prolonging my studies a semester do minor’s help on resume? Like ECON BA Math Minor, Econ BA Computer science Minor, Econ BA Business Minor ( Ross may be making a minor in 2013 school year) ?

Last post on this subject but do you think a year and half is worth Ross ?

earliest i could graduate is spring 2014 with Econ major ( 4 Semesters )
earliest i could graduate from Ross is fall 2015 ( 7 Semesters )

so basically year & half difference worth it ?

I had a similar dilemma applying as a sophomore and had the choice whether or not to graduate in 3 and a half or 4 years with a BA in Econ or 4 and a half with BA Econ and BBA. I decided the extra semester was worth it, but only because of the double major option. (it IS possible to finish the BBA program in 5 semesters at least)

For your situation I would recommend just the BA and to get into the working world. Many companies go to Ross to find talent, but at the end of the day it’s talented students they want, not just the BBAs. If you ever need I can forward you recruiting schedules through Ross, I’ve heard firms are usually happy to talk with Lsa kids as well, assuming they’re bright. Then just work hard in the working world and get an MBA later.

flyboy, are you gonna do the dual degree? I think we’re in the same situation… I just got into Ross (sophomore applicant) and I’m planning to do a BA in Econ and a BBA. I think it’s worth it too

Yup! I figure the BBA sequence will be 5 semesters regardless of what else I do, and seeing as I have a ****ton of lsa credits and love Econ, might as well double up and make the extra semester count for something. Maybe we’ll be in the same section haha

I think i will consider the dual degree as well since i am transferring in 60+ and will do 30 credits this year at UMICH if not at least the BBA Ross & Minor Econ. what sucks about the dual is you have to fulfill the LSA distribution.

For the real world it’s so completely not worth it to get an econ and bba dual degree. You’re wasting time and effort to be completely honest unless you want to get like a PhD in econ, and if you do you should not be in Ross in the first place. The dual degree is more there for like poli sci types that want to combine business and policy.

I agree that theyre similar enough to skip doing both, just for me personally I love Econ and find it different enough from business to pursue it. Luckily Ross is highly regarded, but at most schools a business major can be seen as a “blowoff” field of study while Econ is perceived as analytical and more rigorous quantitatively.

Coupled with the fact that MBA and BBA programs are very similar, studying something else in undergrad can broaden your perspective on things. I’ll do both because I love Econ and the opportunities Ross provides. Hell maybe I’ll pursue a masters in Econ later in life.

maizeandblue, I would agree with you except I am not wasting time or effort by doing a dual degree. I’ll start by saying I am way more excited about the BBA than the Econ degree. But since I applied to Ross as a sophomore, I will have to stay longer to get my BBA anyway. I feel like if I am going to stay for a 5th year (or at least a 9th semester), I may as well make it worth it by getting a second degree in an Econ program that I’m already pretty far into. I have heard from other people that getting a BA in Econ won’t add anything to my BBA, but I think my situation is different. Anyone have an opinion on this?

^^Sam hit it on the head for my situation as well.

Just a BBA= 5 Semesters
BBA+BA Econ=5 Semesters

We’d be stupid not to.
